The Actor and The Thief by Edward Kendrick ~ Review by Beverley

I loved this cover and was definitely drawn to it. This author is also very prolific and I hadn’t read anything by him before so, when I was offered the chance I was very pleased to accept.

The Actor and the thief
Title:The Actor and the Thief

Author:Edward Kendrick

Publisher: Wilde City Press

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

BLURB
Once they were a couple. Now—they’re far from it.

Just out of prison, Craig heads to Denver. At the same time Adam, on tour with a Broadway show, arrives there. Also heading to Denver are two men bent on finding Craig for their own nefarious reasons.

When Craig and Adam accidentally meet sparks fly, but not of the good kind. Then Craig finds his mentor murdered and believes he’s the reason why. He calls on Adam, the only man he can trust for help. Can they work together, and possibly re-kindle their love? Or will Adam walk away again?

My View

Mr Kendrick is a very proficient writer and I suspect a very disciplined one. This story ‘does what it says on the tin’. It is the story of two men, Adam and Craig, from very different walks of life who, after meeting following twenty years separation become embroiled in a joint venture. This venture is to retrieve Craig’s ‘savings’, earned during his life of crime, avoid the thugs who are trying to steal it and see those same thugs punished for killing Craig’s friend and mentor. Adam is a now ageing successful actor, who has never forgotten Craig or the relationship they had together. Craig is a thief who likewise has never forgotten Adam and needs a reason to retire from his life of crime. The plot is almost clinically worked out and the rekindled love affair between the men simply resolved. There is a low level of angst, which in some ways is quite refreshing and the physical side of their relationship is smooth and whilst passionate, familiarity replaces the sweaty, grunting and grinding associated with younger pairings. The ending is very sweet.

Author’s hate when reviewers comment I wish it had been longer and I realise they are not always in control of the length of a novella…However, I really felt that we missed the real story, which was how Craig and Adam met and started their relationship, twenty years before. What lead to Adam deciding he couldn’t take anymore. How did the break up affect their later life decisions and then how they got together again and… I realise this is a different story but I think it’s the one I would rather have read.
