A Party Boy’s Guide to Dating a Geek by Piper Vaughn and Xara X. Xanakas ~ Reviewed by Paisley

When it comes to M/M Romance I have a few favorite themes, and one of my most beloved is the shy nerdy guy with the hot jock, or flashy stud, or serious party boy. I adore it when a cocky man falls hard for someone unexpected. There is just nothing like seeing his smirky comeuppance at the hands of a geek!

So, when I saw The Party Boy’s Guide to Dating a Geek I really hoped it would be one for me – and I was so glad that it was.

Description from the Publisher:
Ashley Byrne only wants one thing in life: to finish his tattoo apprenticeship and fulfill his dream of owning his own shop. In the meantime, he spends his nights partying, flirting, and having sex. After all, what else is there for him to worry about? Aside from his hair and his clothes, not much. He’s hot, and rest assured no one knows it better than him. He’s also used to getting what he wants—until he meets Felipe Navarro.

Fee Navarro has everything he needs: a great IT job, a nice apartment, and all the high-tech toys his geeky heart could ever want. He doesn’t do casual, and he knows guys like Ash are nothing but. Ash may burn hot for Fee, but Fee isn’t willing to take a chance on a vain, little party boy with too many tats and an oversized ego. He wants someone to share his life with, and he won’t settle for anything less. Too bad Ash has never been the type to give up easily. He has a plan, and he’s not stopping until he proves he’s more than just a pretty face—he’s someone worthy of winning Fee’s heart.

My View:
This one is a slow burn and it should be that way. Any true shy, nerdy guy would be slow to give it up to a party boy right?  Giving someone a chance with your heart and building that trust takes time. Making a party boy wait and keep it in his pants for a change is delicious fun. Seeing a character grow and change from the experience is one of the reasons that I love this theme.

The story is written from Ash’s perspective but I found there to be enough good dialogue to get to know Fee properly too. Sometimes stories really suffer from not getting the perspective of both characters, and I was so happy that wasn’t the case here. Since it is really Ash’s story (and his comeuppance) I enjoyed taking the journey with his heart.  I will say for a slick party boy he is rather insecure, and that makes me very appreciative of him working to win Fee’s love.

I think that one of the most striking aspects of this book is the cover. They took a risk here. It’s not your typical naked torso or geek in glasses, it truly does look like a guide book or some sort of manual. I can tell you it reads nothing like a manual – it’s funny and sweet and very sexy too. There is quite a bit of geek speak and references to Sci-Fi culture, but it all made the story gel together well. So glad I looked beyond the cover and found this very fun and romantic story!

  1. I read this book last year and absolutely adored it! I, too, love a good nerd/party boy romance and I’m absolutely in love with tattoos and tattooists 🙂 Great review!!
