We would like to thank Haley B James for stopping by today to talk about her latest Dreamspinner Press release, Polyester Prince. Don’t forget to check out Brandilyn’s review.
Interview with Haley B James
Okay we will start with an easy one. How did you get started in M/M?
The internet introduced me to MM through fandom, slash, and yaoi. (I describe yaoi as the Japanese MM romance). Slash is when a fan of something pairs two characters for romance (or just sex, I guess) who do not actually have a romance in the story. The internet is a wonderful thing.
We are here today talking about your latest release, Polyester Prince. What can you tell us about it?
Polyester Prince was a joy to write. It’s very light-hearted compared to my other stories, and more on the comedy side too. Benji and Neal return as side characters, and Kyle’s interactions with Benji will always be my favorite scenes to write. They are very opposite in their comfort levels so Kyle can really fluster Benji with just the slightest bit of teasing.
My introduction to your work was Undercover Sins, which is about an undercover cop. The ABQ Heat series once again stars cops. So, why law enforcement?
I would love to say there’s some deep meaning behind it, but I just really love cops. Law enforcement fascinates me, and I respect a person who can do a job I know I couldn’t handle. There’s also the little fun addition of a uniform fetish. *cough*
Many authors use pictures and actual people as inspiration for their characters. Who are you inspiration for Kyle and his polyester prince?
Some of Kyle’s exploits come straight out of my best friend’s real life. His personality doesn’t match Kyle’s, but his life inspired some of the situations Kyle finds himself in. Officer McGorgeous-Ass came from the depths of my mind.
What about for your stories in general? Where does your inspiration come from? What about for ABQ Heat and PP, specifically?
Inspiration hits from a line in a song, a conversation among friends, or something unrelated from a TV show or an anime. Water Waltz was inspired by a scene in Archer, and those two couldn’t be any more different. In 2011 I took a citizen police course offered by the Albuquerque Police Department, and it really helped spark the idea of a contemporary romance without massive amounts of drama or explosions involving an officer. But it was my discontent with the local media regarding police that created Benji and Paid Leave. The plot for Polyester Prince stemmed from the idea of having Kyle search for the cutest butt on the force.
In PP, Kyle is determined to find his perfect ass man. Do you believe in love at first site (even if it is the sight of a perfect polyester-clad ass hehe)?
I don’t know about love at first sight, but I think someone can look at a person and fall in instant lust. Although, I do believe just a conversation can drag two people into love. Kyle gets a conversation-like interaction with his prince but his memory only latches onto that ass.
I know you have written fantasy and contemporary, what other sub-genres have you tried and which ones have tempted you?
I have a Sci-Fi WIP that is constantly on my backburner that I really want to finish but I can’t find enough time to focus on the science part of it. I would love to do something in the historical genre, but I lack the self-discipline needed to research everything needed to be the most accurate as possible.
Who are your literary heroes? Who do you hope to emulate?
Outside of MM romance my two favorite authors are Kate Ross and CS Harris. Both have a gorgeous style and write historical novels with charming male leads. Within MM romance I can’t get enough of Shira Anthony and Charlie Cochet. Both have a way with words that make me hug my Nook.
What are you working on right now? What is next?
I’m wrapping up the sequel to Undercover Sins. After that one is done, I plan to start another fantasy novel.
About the Author
Hayley B. James is a lifelong resident of New Mexico with no plans to pack up and leave just yet. Writing is her part-time job and full-time hobby. She works in a small office during the day and lives in her written worlds at night.
When she isn’t writing, Hayley is reading m/m romance, mystery, real-life crime, fantasy, and yaoi novels, and can be found cruising Tumblr and webcomics. She may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with police officers. It’s still up for debate.
From the Publisher
Kyle Edington built his life around clubs, alcohol, nameless sex, and turning a blind eye to his future, but having front row access to his best friend’s perfect relationship leaves him wanting something he doesn’t understand—the white picket fence. After an ankle injury hinders his plans for PrideFest and puts his day job selling furniture at risk, Kyle attends Pride anyway to cheer himself up. Leaving his crutches at home was a mistake, though, and he’s shoved off balance and hits his head.
A bike officer keeps him safe until the paramedics arrive. Kyle’s memory of the event is foggy. He doesn’t recall the name or face of his guardian angel, but he definitely remembers the finest polyester-covered ass in all of Albuquerque.
But when he goes in search of his polyester prince, Kyle realizes relationships take hard work. After he learns the name of that perfect ass, a lifetime of avoiding serious boyfriends leaves Kyle second-guessing himself and making difficult decisions about what he wants for his future.
