So… You know when you are kid and your parents telling you “don’t do that” is really just an invitation to do exactly that? Well apparently I never out-grew that phase, only now, I am the one telling myself what I can and can’t do. Everytime I tell myself I won’t read some trope, within a few months I am reading, and usually enjoying, said trope. My latest wall to crumble? Mermen. Yep, I said Mermen. I told myself that it just wasn’t going to happen. It is too… weird. So anyway, umm, yeah, I am getting pretty good at eating my words at this point.

In the 1700s on the island of Sagrario, men who love other men find safe haven. For Francis Holland, an escaped indentured servant, Sagrario offers nothing but loneliness. His life begins to change when he finds Wick, a merman, washed ashore.
When Wick awakens under Francis’s care, Francis returns him to the sea at his request. Soon after, they begin to meet in secret, and gradually, Francis blossoms under this new companionship. However, a merman is a difficult creature to entrust one’s heart to. With one trapped on land and the other at sea, the differences in their species threaten to keep them apart forever. It may not be long before Wick is gone, taking Francis’s reason to smile with him.
Francis has not had an easy life. Not only was he abused and disfigured by a previous master, he is basically ignored and used on the little island were he lives. One night while walking the beach he discovers a mythical creature, in the flesh. After only one day together, he realizes he let a piece of his heart go when he let Wick go back home. After weeks of trying to forget, he is once again drawn to the spot of his discovery, only to be drawn deeper into the Merman’s world. Together they quickly discover that their differences don’t mean as much as their affection for one another, but that they still may pose a road block to long term happiness.
I don’t want to get to deep with this book, there are themes that could be discussed for ages to come. We could talk about redemption… or diversity and love conquering all… or love at first sight… or doing anything you can to be with the one you love… or the absolute shattering of your soul when you other half is taken from you. That is a lot of meaning packed into 42 short pages. So we will take it how it is meant, as a light read with a beautiful love story and a happy ending. At its essence it is a M/M fairy tale; it is an enjoyable read that I happily recommend.
