I would like to thank Author Maris Black for stopping by to talk with us today and give you stuff 😉
First off, I’d like to thank Marc for inviting me to do a guest post. He’s asked me to cover a few topics, so let’s see how I do. And of course, thanks to all the readers. Without readers, Maris Black would just be a housewife with a dream.
Now, a little about me…
My best friend and I wrote fan fiction before it was cool, passing a white vinyl folder stuffed with stories back and forth and taking turns writing about imaginary escapades with our idols. Then the folder was stolen. I don’t know who ended up with those ridiculous stories, but I’m sure they’ll surface if I ever become president.
In college, I majored in English and discovered the joys of creative writing and literary interpretation. After honing my skills of ferreting out symbolism and discovering hidden meanings authors probably never intended, I collected my English degree and got a job at a newspaper. It soon became clear that small town reporting wasn’t going to pay the bills, so I went to work in the medical field. Logical progression, right? No matter what I did, though, I couldn’t get fiction writing out of my blood. I’m a compulsive plotteró always have been.
I’ve done a lot of reading in my time, and in a lot of different genres. Most recently I’ve been captivated by the M/M genre. I have enjoyed so many authors, but I suppose I should mention Barbara Elsborg as a favorite. She consistently entertains me whether she’s writing gay or straight.
Where writing is concerned, the M/M genre feels sort of like coming home; I can’t quite explain it. I’ve always had openly gay and bisexual friends and relatives, the rights and acceptance of whom are very important to me, so it feels great to celebrate that. But there’s also something so pure and honest about the love between two men that appeals to me and inspires me to write.
Owning Corey was the first piece of writing that I truly wanted to share with the world. It seemed the perfect combination of my medical background, my fascination with gay fiction, and my need to wander just a little bit off the beaten path. The introduction of the menage aspect was risky, but the idea of a love between two men unfolding in such an unexpected way was just irresistible to me. I guess it was a risk that paid off, because the book has received a lot of positive feedback.
My second book, Pinned, came about because I thought a couple of wrestlers getting it on was just too damn sexy! The guys in this book are college jocksó young and very physical. It’s only been out for a few days, so I’ll include a blurb and an excerpt.
Two hot college wrestlers take it off the mat…
All Jeremy Miller can think about is getting away from his abusive home life, making the wrestling team, and finally getting a real boyfriend. He’s sick of being used by high-school football players who are too afraid to admit they like guys. What he doesn’t count on is losing his heart to the gorgeous, golden-eyed captain of the wrestling team…
Or having to keep their hot, sweaty nights a secret at all costs.
With a wrestling scholarship, a shot at a national title, and a guaranteed spot in an elite sports medicine program, Beck has got it made. Yeah, he’s gay and wishing he didn’t have to hide it, but there will be plenty of time for dating after graduation. Until then, he doesn’t need anything to get in the way of his big plans. Not even the adorable freshman wrestler he can’t stop pinning to the mattress every chance he gets.
Why won’t the sexy little bastard stop tempting him?
After a while, I start noticing that one of the jocks in the group crowded around the red truck directly across the clearing has got his eyes trained right on us. It strikes me as odd not only because it’s the second time I’ve caught him staring, but also because his drunk girlfriend is on his lap, swinging her hair across his face and gyrating her hips in time with the music. If Jeremy was riding my lap like that, there’s no way I could pay attention to anything else. So why is he staring so intently at us?
Maybe he’s gearing up to do a little gay bashing.
Somehow, I don’t think that’s it. In fact, I’m starting to suspect it’s got everything to do with Jeremy, and that I’m not going to like it one bit. Especially because the guy is totally Jeremy’s typeó a jock with killer muscles and boy-next-door good looks. My stomach sinks at the thought of them being together, but curiosity gets the best of me, and I decide to test out my theory.
Staring unflinchingly at the jock, making sure he knows I’m looking at him, I reach over and run my hand slowly up Jeremy’s thigh and all the way to his dick. It’s such a direct and obvious challenge; I know Caleb would be proud. Jeremy looks surprised, but he recovers quickly and leans in to me with a smile, letting me have my way with his sweet mouth.
If anyone is watching, and I know for a fact that at least one person is, they don’t have to wonder anymore if Jeremy and I are having sex. I’ve just answered that question beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I continue to watch the jock out of the corner of my eye, searching for a reaction. He doesn’t disappoint.
Even from this distance, I can see his muscles tense. He stands abruptly, dumping the girl off his lap in the process. She squeals, but he doesn’t pay her any attention. Instead, he levels a murderous glare at me before turning and throwing his beer bottle toward the woods, where it smashes against a tree and sends glass and rivulets of beer raining down onto his screaming friends.
“Hey, watch it Matt,” one of his buddies yells, jumping up out of his lawn chair and shaking himself off. Most of the group is so drunk they just laugh and swipe at their clothing, several of the girls still squealing.
“This is bullshit!” Matt stalks away for a moment to collect himself, pacing the edge of the woods with his head in his hands. His girl approaches cautiously, touching him on the shoulder, but he shrugs her hand off, and she goes back to stand with some of the other girls.
“Damn,” Jeremy remarks casually. “He seems pretty wasted, huh?”
“Appears so,” I agree, wondering why he doesn’t just come out with it. His vagueness only serves to make me suspicious.
What if he only asked you here to make someone else jealous?
The thought turns my stomach. Jeremy wouldn’t do that, would he? He couldn’t fake the kind of passion he has for me, could he?
I sit mulling over the disturbing thoughts for a while, getting more and more agitated with each passing moment. After a while, Jeremy grabs another beer from the cooler. “Open this for me?” He jumps off the tailgate. “I gotta go take a piss.”
He’s gone before I can even think to object, trotting off toward the woods. Would it have been crazy to insist on chaperoning him?
And then the unthinkable happens. Matt the pissed off jock follows Jeremy into the woods. Jealousy, hatred, suspicion and worry all combine inside me, a volatile mix that will explode if I don’t get off my ass and do something about it.
I’m on my feet, making my way steadily toward the spot in the woods where the other two were heading. I’m half afraid of what I might find there, but I have to go. Dammit, I’m not some schmuck who’s just going to sit around while this asshole tries to edge me out. And in a dark wood, no less.
