Ok. This is the 24th book I have read by this author so you could say I am a Mary Calmes fan. This book was picked for me for a challenge and it is an absolute gem. As my 3rd book of 2014 it has gone straight into my favourite pile and will definitely be re-read. It has shifters! This is what initially attracted me but oh boy the story is so much more! The true thing that stood out for me was compassion. The lack of compassion when someone ‘looks’ different is a terribly sad thing.

When jackal shifter Quade Danas was banished from his pack for being gay, he spent years in the military escaping his father’s prejudice before returning to civilian life as a bodyguard for Roman Howell, the teenage son of a very rich man. After Roman is in an accident that leaves him physically scarred and emotionally distant, Quade is the only one who can get through to him. As Roman becomes a man, he realizes what he wants—his bodyguard by his side and in his bed. Unfortunately, Quade can’t seem to see past the kid Roman once was to the man he has become, certain Roman’s feelings are merely misplaced gratitude. But Roman knows a lot more than Quade realizes, and he’s used to persevering, no matter how many impediments life throws his way. He wants the chance to prove to Quade that he’s strong enough for a jackal alpha to call mate.
Despite the decades Quade has been away, and the heartache of his father’s rejection, his inborn loyalty to the pack remains, and his abrupt departure left the jackal shifters without an alpha heir. As a psychopath shifter staking claim as alpha draws Quade back home, and Quade feels compelled to heed the call, he may be forced to make a choice he never anticipated. But doing so means he must leave Roman behind… unless somehow they find a way to make loyalty and love work together.
Roman has everything in life. His parents are wealthy and adore him, fully excepting when he tells them he is gay. He is popular with his peers, good looking and heads up the swim team. Life is good – until he is involved in a crash on the way back from a swim meet and suffers devastating burns. His appearance is forever altered and his life forever changed. Not long after his recovery has started his parents die in an accident and the one steadfast person in his life is his bodyguard/friend Quade.
Quade is a Jackal Shifter who is banished from his pack by his father and alpha for being a gay man. After spending years in the Army then finding the love of his life in bed with his best friend he travels around until he runs into the Howells, saving Mrs Howell from a kidnapping attempt. He ends up in their employ and takes on the role of bodyguard to their son.
When Romans parents die it is Quade that is there for this fragile young man. His love, strength and ability to see past the scars that now define Romans features are what gets him through some awful times. Their relationship is such a strong and tangible thing. Quade is the protector and will not allow the money grabbers of the world get too close to his charge. There is good humoured snark between the pair, with Quade frequently reminding Roman that he must be polite even when people stare.
As the pair get older their feelings change for each. For Quade this causes panic, he thinks of himself as too old and not good enough. For Roman all bets are off as he makes his feelings clear and will not be thwarted. When he drops into the conversation that he has known Quade is a shifter since his late teens this just adds to the confusion.
When Quades sister Raisa shows up out of the blue after 20 years asking for help with their out of control alpha Quade returns home and leaves Roman, after only a couple of days he feels like he has left his heart behind.
Watching these 2 men work out their relationship was wonderful. When they got it together it was hot! I found myself rooting for Roman and shouting at Quade to stop being such a stubborn ass! The thing that really stuck out for me all the way through the book though was that Quade never saw the scars or the damage to Roman. He only saw and loved the person.
