Stupid Cupid was written in response to a submission call for Anti-Valentine’s stories by MLR Press. While I love these calls for their ability to bring new authors into the genre, I don’t think they ever reflect said authors’ best work.
Title: Stupid Cupid
Author: Nicole Dennis
Publisher: MLR Press
My Rating: 3.25* of 5 stars
From the Publisher:
A man who hates Valentine’s Day gets a surprise smack of romance.
With horrid Valentine’s Day experiences, Preston Larkin hates the holiday with a passion to the point he prefers to be drunk and unconscious. Heading to a club, SideWays, he plans to drink and dance until the 15th. He didn’t expect a cute admirer to alter everything. Adoring Lark from afar for over a year, Colin Gabriels finds the courage to buy the man a drink, dance the night away, and take him upstairs to the private rooms. His expectations of the man isn’t matching the reality. Things falter the next morning, but Preston changes everything.
Lark hasn’t had the best luck with Valentine’s Day. So he is a jerk to everyone around him for the days leading up to the “big day”. When a patron with a long time crush on him finds out just how big of a jerk Lark can be, his friends decide it is time for Lark to change his ways.
For what it is, Stupid Cupid is a hot little tale of lost love and new lust. The plot is thin and I never did figure out WHY Colin would give Lark another chance, nor did I figure out why Lark would want another chance with Colin. Any chemistry between the characters didn’t come over in the story, it seemed to be just hot, one-night-stand sex.
However, having said that I look forward to other offerings from this author. Her writing style, I believe, lends itself to the m/m romance genre. I would like to see what Nicole Dennis can do, when she isn’t under the restraints of a specific call for submission.
I would like to thank MLR Press for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
