Triad: Book Two
A pack is only as strong as its weakest member. Rocky Harris knows how the system works. He’s been on the bottom rung his whole life. But when his alpha consigns him to the High Moon Pack to help them improve security, he finds his beliefs not just challenged but outright assaulted.
Cade Montgomery’s confidence took a hit when the pack’s cubs were kidnapped on his watch. He’s prepared to do anything to protect his family, even if it means working with Rocky. Maybe Cade doesn’t trust Rocky, but with the turmoil surrounding pack Alpha Gray’s unpopular decision to break tradition and mate with a mage named Simon, Cade knows more threats are coming.
Then someone declares war on shifters and puts the entire pack in danger. Cade and Rocky will need each other’s strengths to survive the impending battle—and the power of their growing attraction.
Body Magic isn’t a stand alone book; instead, it’s the second in Poppy Dennison’s wolf shifter triad that starts with the exciting and very good Mind Magic. Body Magic begins immediately where Mind Magic ends, with Gray, pack Alpha, just mated to Simon, a Mage. Unlike many individual books in triads that each focus on three separate couples, this story continues the development of Gray and Simon’s relationship as a main story line. A secondary couple, High Moon Beta, Cade, and Rocky, an Omega from another wolf pack, is also introduced. The conflict surrounding Cade and Rocky’s relationship is not resolved at the end of this book, and will continue into the third book of the triad.
Dennison’s Body Magic isn’t merely an interesting romance, the underlying plot is filled with intrigue, action, and plot twists. Dennison carrying the evolution of the story, as well as the development of the characters, across three books allows her to create a richly detailed world that entices the reader (or listener). While I would have enjoyed the establishment of Cade and Rocky as a couple earlier in the story, the growing affection and commitment of Gray and Simon is believable and loving.
Often the middle book of a triad is the weakest of the three, and is largely a space holder between the first and third book. However, Body Magic is both the great continuation of Dennison’s first book, Mind Magic, as well as an interesting and intriguing book in its own right. I recommend Body Magic (read or listen to Mind Magic first), and I definitely have Dennison’s final book in this triad, Soul Magic, on my “to buy” list when it is released in May!
Also, Robert G. Davis’ narration of Body Magic is enjoyable – he has a smooth, masculine voice that is particularly effective when he is reading the various male characters’ dialog. However, his depiction of the female characters has a bit of an unusual nasal quality. Overall, I found listening to Davis’ rendition of Body Magic entertaining, and I will not hesitate to listen to other audio books that he narrates.
I would like to thank Dreamspinner Press for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
