Protection by John Amory ~ Review by Brandilyn

I will admit, I overlooked this little gem when it was first published.  I decided to give it a read after chatting with the author during a Dreamspinner Press meet the author chat (they are fond of those).  Amory’s contribution to the Grand Adventures anthology is a follow-on to this story, so I wanted to give it a read.

ProtectionLGTitle
: Protection

Author: John Amory

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

From the Publisher:

Jamie is an anomaly in the shooting world: a relative newcomer who became a leading contender overnight. He’s representing the United States at the 2012 Olympics, and people are drawn to him both for his marksmanship and the past he refuses to divulge. During his downtime in London, Jamie visits a gay bar and meets a chipper young man named Ben. Despite Ben’s heartfelt offer of succor, Jamie’s mounting nerves over the Games and his scars from the past threaten the new relationship before the night even begins.

My View

Protection is a short and sweet tale of a pick-up that just might be more.   Jamie almost died and now he is at the Olympics.   When someone recognizes him at G-A-Y Bar, he is taken aback and they spend the evening talking and the night doing more.  But that is all it can be, one night, right?  Well, unfortunately for HEA-seekers, that question is left to your imagination.

The thing that sticks with me most about Protection is the interesting mix of voice in the story.  The story is told during present time third person from Jamie’s point of view, but is intermixed with flashbacks in first person (also from Jamie’s POV).  It took a few transitions to get used to, but it was and interesting way to look at the story.

Protection was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to more from this author.  (Oh, I followed this with Amory’s contribution to the Grand Adventures anthology.  We get to see Jamie and Ben 2 years later… so you HEA-seekers should keep that in mind 😉 ).

  1. I bought this a while ago but haven’t read this. I going to need this for after I finish reading the Souls in Bondage series (Book 1 had me tearing up…). Thanks for the review.
