Title: Sunburns and Sunsets
Author: Brigham Vaughn
My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
From the Publisher:
Best friends, Eric Carver and Kris Strider have always shared everything. Except for Eric’s growing attraction to Kris. On a camping trip to celebrate the end of the school year a sunburn leads to fooling around and neither are sure what it means. Kris is certain he likes girls but his sudden attraction to Eric can’t be denied. He’s completely fine with his best friend being gay, but now that he knows Eric wants him, he isn’t sure what to do about it. Eric thought all he wanted was to fool around with his friend, but when it starts to feel like something more, he isn’t sure what to do. Are his feelings for Kris worth risking twelve years of friendship?
One thing I love about picking up a Brigham Vaughn story is that I know it will be high quality. She may have a tendency to write short stories, but they are not lacking in tight prose, lovable characters, or believable story. Sunburns & Sunsets is another example.
There was nothing surprising or unexpected in the relationship in S&S, but it felt very organic in its development. Eric is in love with his (straight) best friend, but things take a turn during a post-graduation camping trip. What starts out as just some experimentation grows, slowly (well as slowly as a week will allow) to be more. I appreciated the fact that Kris wasn’t instantly in love. I appreciated that Kris wasn’t instantly “I’m Gay”. I appreciated that Kris embraced that what he thought he know may not be completely true. I appreciated that he made Eric feel special even while he was figuring things out.
This is not a week together and happily ever after. This is two lifetime friends seeing where things may or may not go. I would love to see how things progress for these two in the future.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
