Sunday Spotlight on… PORN Pt 2 (NSFW) 18+ ~ Beverley with Giveaway

Thank you to everyone who commented on Part 1 of this look at PORN. I was concerned that the example pictures and gifs might distract too much. They obviously did attract attention, but I think the words got through as well.

So today we look at the last 5 questions I asked people and my own responses, at the end 😉

lots of men

6) Do men and women watch Porn for different reasons?

7) Why does Porn promote such strong reactions Pro and Con?

8) Is Porn degrading?

9) If Yes, to whom, the ‘participants’ or the viewer?

10) Finally limits? When does Porn become abuse and what is not acceptable to film and/or watch?2 yum

6) Without a doubt everyone agreed that men and women watched porn for the same reasons. However, I apologise to my recipients as I worded the question badly. Of course the men could not answer for women and vice versa though when they did answer, rather than just point this out to me, the answers were the same regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Porn is watched for masturbatory arousal, for fun with friends, for personal education or spicing up established relationships. It entertains, relieves and alleviates loneliness or boredom. None of these reasons are ‘bad’ per se and there is no compulsion forcing people to watch porn. So why does the image of human beings having sexual relations cause such outrage and consternation?

1012893_617277448362793_107355320887839725_n7) This is the difficult one, as views regarding porn are as diverse as they are strong. It was the only question I sent out that truly did have diverse responses. There have been many studies that have shown that at some level pornographic miles of man (non porn)images and even films can help people,

…what about the more casual exposure typical of most porn users? Contrary to what many people believe, recent research shows that moderate pornography consumption does not make users more aggressive, promote sexism or harm relationships. If anything, some researchers suggest, exposure to pornography might make some people less likely to commit sexual crimes. (The Sunny Side of Smut – Melinda Wenner Moyer June 23 2011 –Scientific American)

Many studies are coloured by moral views rather than objective studies into the effects on society. There is no doubt that addiction to porn, like an addiction to anything else, is harmful both to the person with the addiction, their families, friends and society as a whole. However, very few studies look into non addictive use and enjoyment of pornography. The extreme reactions also stem from the belief by a majority of people that sex amounts to private acts between two consenting adults. For some, I would suggest less this century than in the previous one, sex is sacred and should only be undertaken by a couple within the bounds of holy matrimony. Of course if these beliefs are strong and long held they would most likely add the stipulation that the married partners be of the opposite sex but that is a different argument altogether!

Although there have been many studies over the years equating pornography with violence against women there have been equal numbers proving this is not the case. Any research into society’s relationship with pornography is fraught with problems as answers, for reasons of shame, embarrassment, religious sentiments or peer pressure, can be ‘inaccurate’. Happily, in recent times the ideas that women do not look at porn, alone or with partners, has been squashed and although men tend to be more sensitive to visual stimuli, the female of the species is not far behind. In addition if a story element is added the level of stimulus for males and females is about the same. Most heterosexual porn is made by men for men. The only assetFB young and gorgeousrequired is usually to be well hung and the women just need to be able to moan a lot and have pneumatic breasts. Is it any wonder that women have discovered a penchant for gay porn,
Prof Clarissa Smith, author of One For The Girls! (a book about women’s fascination with porn) says,

‘In most cases, the actors in gay porn films are more attractive and have the athletic bodies women fancy.’
Watching and reading gay male porn also allows women to explore unchartered territory. When women are faced with a male and female romance or sex scene, they naturally associate with the female. When it’s men-only, you can be whatever you fancy – submissive or dominant.(Metro 14 October 2008)

Although I have no GIFS this week, the pictures posted would come under different labels for different people. Which ones do you think are Porn, Art, Erotic, or any combination of these? Would you call any of them ‘Hard Porn’…?
One respondent brought up an important point,

I never have and never will understand why people are perfectly happy to watch all sorts of horrible
violence and yet get squeamish as soon as one or two naked bodies appear on their screen.

8)and9)Many respondents felt that whether the porn was degrading or not depended on the attitudes of the people involved. This also ties in with whom respondents felt were degraded, and in a way spills over to question 10). Like any other entertainment or art form we wish actors and production staff to be treated well and made to feel empowered by their choices. I can’t help feeling that we are being a little naive in assuming that Porn stars are all treated well and go into this profession happily. One of our respondents stated very strongly that being a porn actor was a job plain and simple and one that is ‘…misrepresented in fiction and on Social Media.’ The respondent also felt this applied to the more personal services that porn stars can be paid for. I’m not sure if I would agree totally, but it is very clear that pornography and prostitution are very different beasts and not necessarily interchangeable.hotel peen

For several reasons these posts are decorated with rather gorgeous photos of men. Personally, I do not think of the photos of men, naked and posed for these photos alone are necessarily pornographic. Erotic yes, but  pornography? Some of these photos were given to me by the photographer Dan Skinner and he wanted to state that his work is NOT pornographic but erotic photo story telling. In addition many of us are aware of, and vicariously acquainted with, the models in these photos and know categorically that these models enjoy themselves and work with Dan regularly, often over many years. What do you think?

10)Finally,before I reveal my answers 🙂  Limits there was a consensus amongst respondents concerning ‘off limit’ subjects for them in pornography. Absolute NOs were under age performers, some went as far as to say that even if performers looked under age it was a no go for them. Likewise heavy use of violence or force, rape, snuff films were just not acceptable. There were certain elements of sex play, which not all, but the majority were against including water sports, scat play, blood play, humiliation etc.

Things are less straightforward when other elements of BDSM and fetishes were considered. I feel overall it would be fair to say that light BDSM including spanking, paddles, fetishes, bondage and D/s was acceptable to most, with the heavier pain and bondage play etc. only for those more involved in that lifestyle. Likewise the majority found certain fetishes were hard limits whilst others find them necessary for arousal. One fetish that seemed to be liked by most was the use of and wearing of leather. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study into why this is…

There may be some of you who will become aware that I have not included any Heterosexual porn clips or pictures here, and although I feel the photos at the bottom show like with like male and female erotic images. Regarding porn, most of the sites or hubs that I was advised to go to for heterosexual porn I found quite revolting. This is obviously a very personal statement and I shall revisit it at the bottom of the post.

Ok. I have tried to represent the views or everyone who replied to me, and I hope it worked. Here are my answers to the questions I kept private for everyone else!

Do I watch porn? Have you seen this week and last week’s posts…?! Oh the one to the left of this text is an advert for Chanel.tumblr_n4tus3IA6X1r2z8rro1_500

Definition of porn? Mine doesn’t really differ from anyone else’s mentioned. I believe it to be any representation of the human body engaged in sexual practices for the purpose of sexual stimulation in others. It tends to be sex without real love, although it can be acted as such for the sake of the audience.

Gay or Heterosexual porn, the same moral argument apply, as do the rules. Rules, which allow us the viewer or voyeur to feel comfortable watching these sexual practices.

Contrary to most people replying I think men and women view porn if not for different reasons, in different ways. I also think gay and straight men view porn in slightly different ways. Example, I think gay men are more honest about the fact that they watch porn. I also think that less stigma is attached to watching gay porn for gay men. They accept their own sexual needs more readily than straight men do, maybe because they are often surrounded by people who would have them suppress those needs. I also think that the majority of women would not watch heterosexual porn on their own but with their male partners. I think women would watch gay porn on their own. From my experience straight men seem to require porn as a lone masturbatory aid or as a ‘laugh’ with their friends, when accompanied by lots of alcohol. You only have to look at some of the hetero porn ‘hubs’, and believe me in the name of research I have, to see why straight women prefer gay porn! Simply put, although you can pick different categories (Bear, Twink, fisting etc. etc.), the men in gay porn are hotter and more attractive. As the second part of my answer we watch porn for arousal, comfort, masturbation and pure entertainment (ok not pure 😉 )

reunion1Sex creates strong reactions in people, so as porn is sex…However, what people object to depends on the individual’s or group’s view of sex in general. I fall into the no hurt, no foul category. As long as there is no exploitation of the participants, I have no problem. There are many more important subjects and issues to worry about.

Is porn degrading? It can be, I feel degraded for having watched some of the het porn that I had to peak at to be fair for these posts. They were sleazy, cheesy and unattractive to look at. The women were only there as a convenient orifice and to moan loudly. It never felt equal between participants. Many of the sub categories made me feel revolted and dirty for even having seen the stills advertising them. However, just because I felt like that doesn’t mean someone else might find it amazingly sexy and find it rocks their boat. It is NOT my place or anyone else’s, to judge. I just shan’t be going near any of it ever again and I need brain bleach :O

There are activities and fetishes in gay porn too, which would turn me off but as with the Het. porn I just shan’t be watching. Is it degrading to the performers? I am sure that sometimes it is. I am not naive enough to believe that every scene takes place between participants who like each other or even fancy each other. However, actively witnessing ‘sad eyes’ or no sign of arousal that is a major turn off and makes me feel bad for the participants. So, as one very wise respondent told me,

Degradation is in the mind of the beholder. The viewer is the ultimate arbitrator.

My view about limits concurs with what I have already reported, but I would include animals as well. I found one more to add to my list of no nos when researching this post and that is Het. Pregnancy porn. I wouldn’t have listed it before simply because I would never have thought such a thing could exist. For me there is a purity surrounding pregnancy, which is totally sullied by being in pornography. Additionally, one of the limits we all agreed with were cases where a participant was unwilling or unknowing. I rest my case.

For me most Het porn is not for me and I have mentioned why. Below are some pics to please the leather lovers and to show beautiful erotic het images.

  1. Great post, well written and well thought out. And while my aversion to het-porn is nowhere near as strong as yours, I do agree with virtually everything else you’ve said.

  2. Great post, interesting to hear how readers responded. I defintely think there’s a place for porn in a healthy relationsip.

  3. Great article on a tough topic. I’m sure everyone would love to tease you about how “tough”, but I don’t know how much het porn I could take before crying uncle. Honestly, it would be a form of torture -especially if the sound was up. I like to think I’m pretty open minded but I think most of us have an inner moral compass that tips to the ick-level at one point or another. What’s interesting is how all our levels are different.

  4. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic post, Bev! 😀
I agree with a lot of what you said, which I guess probably puts me in line with some of your respondents. I particularly agree re: the point of women watching men on men and finding that a more “freeing” experience, a chance to play any role. I think that’s a big reason many of us women like reading M/M so much, at least I know it’s a reason for me.
Thank you for putting so much time and work into your 2-parter, and thank Dan for us, too! 🙂

    • Thank you that means a lot to me and I will definitely thank Dan for you 🙂
Thank you for all your comments I love reading feedback!

  5. Great post! It definitely was good food for thought. I can watch both, but I am starting to lean away from het-porn more and more. I never thought of it being more freeing to watch gay porn, but that may explain a lot that I haven’t been able to put to words before. Thank Dan for his pictures; they are beautiful! And for the record I thought that most were erotica and none were pornographic.

  6. I thought they were all erotic! I’m not sure what I would consider porn since none of there see like it to me.

  7. A very well reasoned article, I agree with almost all and although I don’t watch much porn definitely prefer mm, much like my reading preferences.

  8. A great 2-parter discussion piece! As well as agreeing with a lot of the comments raised, personal mood and state of mind also makes a difference – sometimes it might be a more mellow, loving scene that’s needed and at others, gritty no-nonsense is what is needed.
As for todays pics, the first and the cockyboys still (poss because I know its a porn site) are saying pornographic to me – the rest not so much and the bottom 4 definitely art for me.

  9. I need to check that Smith book out…I was very impressed by the research survey on porn that she and two colleagues put together a few years ago (the preliminary results are at pornresearch.org). It was one of the few that didn’t put any value judgments on people’s use of it. Again, I don’t like to spend a lot of time categorizing imagery, but it’s interesting to think about what makes the imagery erotic from pic to pic (sometimes it’s subject, sometimes the beauty of the body, other times how the bodies are arranged)…

  10. have to agree on HET porn….does nothing for me, give me gay porn any day! I also have approximately the same limits on what I consider to be too much (water, scat, blood) I honestly don’t get the full body wrap, breath play scene either….but each to their own kink. So long as its safe, sane, consensual I have no issues

  11. Great set of posts Beverley. I found all of the images you posted beautiful in one way or another, are any of them porn? I don’t think so but I guess some might. My opinions on porn have changed much over the years but I do think that, for those that are willingly in porn, it is a job that is perhaps different than most but no less worthy. Thank you for all the effort you put into these posts, it made for very interesting reading.

  12. Very interesting topic. I didn’t find any of the photos pornographic, like you they fall in the erotic category for me. I don’t find porn very stimulating, at least not the manufactured kind. It doesn’t come off real to me. I like the more erotic and natural forms of it. Your limits are the same as mine. Any form of non consent or childish is a huge no no.

  13. I don’t really watch much porn (its very rare when I do). I think I prefer gay porn more just because as you said it’s more “freeing”.

  14. I rarely watch porn. I get bored of it after about10 minutes. Would much rather read (m/m), but I do like erotic pictures and I find all the pix you put on this post more in the erotic realm than the pornographic. Thanks for the interesting topic!
