Another Short from the Mended Daily Dose.
Author: Coral Moore
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Cover Artist: Catt Ford
From the Publisher:
Mario Guzman is trying out for the swim team, his ticket to paying his way through college. When he meets Jordan Lewis, an outspoken writer for the school’s paper, he considers coming out even though he’s been very private about his sexuality all his life.
Violence intended for Jordan takes Mario out of consideration for the team and threatens his best hope for an education. He lashes out when Jordan tries to help him in his time of need. Eventually Mario regrets driving Jordan away, and his need to apologize takes him to the scene of the attack, where he confronts his pain and terror. This time Jordan is there to help him face the biggest obstacle in his path.
I will be honest, after reading the blurb for Deep Water, I almost gave it a pass. However, I am so happy I gave it a second look. I loved this story. Yes it fits into the hurt/comfort theme that is the Mended Daily Dose collection, but more than that it tackles the very real theme of Fear. It looks at overcoming fear through internal strength and the help of friends. It looks at the effects fear can have on one’s life and happiness. It looks at what getting past those fears can bring. It looks at being the one on the outside looking in on a loved one in pain and trapped in the cycle of fear.
I liked Mario and Gina, but I absolutely adored Jordan. He went to bat for the one he cared about. He understood the effects Mario’s fears before Mario had even had a chance to process them, and he acted on them. I want to see more from these two.
I would like to thank Dreamspinner Press for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
