That’s Who I Am by Jayden Brooks ~ Review by Brandilyn

Another great title from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Daily Dose: Mended

ThatsWhoIAm_LGTitle: That’s Who I Am

Author: Jayden Brooks

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

From the Publisher:

Jared Winters’s life has been little more than a collection of moments where he didn’t think before opening his mouth. Always a bit different, he’s learned to accept an existence on the outside looking in. But one day, his mouth lands him in a position that nearly costs him his life. Only the timely intervention of Sophie, his twin Conner’s ex-girlfriend, saves him.

Siblings Sophie and Donovan Carrigan step in and offer support, comfort, and a place to call home. Under their care, Jared begins to heal and learns to trust just enough to act on his attraction to Donovan. He just hopes it’s worth the risk.

My View

I liked reading something just a little different.  I don’t do that nearly enough.  Jayden Brooks has a unique voice that appealed to me.  That’s Who I Am is a heart tugging tale of losing family and finding love… but not in the manner you expect.  Jared has not lived the best life.  He is too sweet to understand that it isn’t his fault.  When his family’s misplaced anger results in a lengthy hospital stay, Jared must find a new home and a new family, even though he doesn’t expect one.

I love Jared.  I want to wrap him up and tell the world that has forsaken him where to shove it.  He doesn’t need me, however, because he has Donovan and Sophie for that role.   While I understood and anticipated the attraction between Donovan and Jared, it somewhat confused me.  The book is in first person, so as usual, you are getting only one main characters thoughts and feelings.  Jared does not have the most confidence in himself or his relationships, so that shortcoming is reflected in his musings regarding Donovan.  You want him to get everything good in the world, but you want to make sure Donovan is the right guy for him.

That’s Who I Am is a fabulous freshman effort from Ms. Brooks and I look forward to more in the future.
