Another Short from the Mended Daily Dose.
Author: Ronnie Matthews
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
My Rating: 3.75 of 5 stars
Cover Artist: Catt Ford
From the Publisher:
The nurses at Sunny Oaks Rehabilitation Center are having a hard time coping with one of their latest transfers. Calvin Manley is rude, uncooperative, and a general pain in the ass. The only member of their team he seems to tolerate is male nurse Brent Jacobs. With stubborn persistence and a gentle hand, Brent aims to shake Calvin out of his depression and back into the waking world.
So… This was not my favorite of the Mended shorts that I read. It was well written, but just never really drew me in. No, that is not quite right. It drew me in in the opening scene, then threw me right back out in the the second scene. I had a hard time getting past the 180 I felt from Cal. After the first scene I loved him. I felt sorry for him. I wanted the best for him. After the second scene, I couldn’t care less about Cal, and I wanted better for Brent. I could not see why Brent would see past the prickly pear that is Cal. I did not end the story asking for my 1/2 hour back, so I that is a positive.
As I reflect on this review, I see two things. One, the story and I did not click. Two, obviously the author did something right if I felt this strongly about Cal after two scenes. Even if the feelings left me confused, they were there. What is the job of an author if not to evoke emotions from the reader?
I would like to thank Dreamspinner Press for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
