With his fauxhawk, sleeve tattoos, and visible piercings, Ridley Corbin has the whole bad ass vibe going on in spades. The image serves him well as the self-proclaimed protector of the underdog, and he wants nothing more than to be Alex Firestone’s hero.
Alex, a mild-mannered library assistant, has moved to Slater, a quiet college town, hoping to hide from his past. He keeps to himself, but that doesn’t save him from catching the unwanted attention of the campus bully. But not all is as it seems. Alex’s past comes calling, and it’s time he becomes top dog.
Never judge a book by its cover and NEVER judge a librarian by his preppy clothes!
I can honestly say after reading the blurb for this one ‘I never saw that coming’.
Ridley Corbin looks like the stereotypical tough guy with his punk hair, piercings and tattoos. It is an image he has built up over the years after suffering at the hands of the school yard bullies. He naturally grew into his role as a protector but at heart he is still a mama’s boy with a lovely soul.
Ridley has been enthralled to the point of obsession with the preppy guy with a mop of curls who works in the library. So much so that even he is starting to believe he has turned into a bit of a stalker. When he is finally brave enough to talk to the guy he is tongue tied and embarrassingly turned on but he finally gets his name and a date.
Alex gives the impression of a clean cut student working part time in the local library. He has attracted the attention of the local jock bully and attention is the last thing he needs. When Ridley jumps in to protect him the two agree to go for a drink and the night that follows leaves them both stunned and wanting more. Alex can’t do friends or form connections with anyone and Ridley is certainly not looking for a boyfriend but neither man can let go of that one night.
Alex has a dangerous past and Ridley is about to get caught up in it in ways that will change his life dramatically. As the truth slowly comes out Ridley seems happy to be getting what he wants but Alex is certain he hasn’t yet realised the cost of his sacrifice.
As they hide out and dodge bullets the very thing both men were trying to avoid happens. These two relationship shy men fall for each other and start dreaming about futures that are not meant to be and are probably impossible.
With the danger as suddenly over as quickly as it began neither man has been brave enough to admit how they feel and it looks as though it is over before it even had a chance to begin.
This is quite different from everything else I have read from this author but it caught me in the first chapter and wouldn’t put me down until I had finished it!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
