This is definitely a ‘smack around the head’ moment for me. As is usually the case with the books that you leave sitting on your TBR pile forever they turn out to be the books you should have read months and months ago!! They also turn out to be nothing like you imagined!
Title: Gravitational Attraction
Author: Angel Martinez
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars
A mysterious distress call draws the crew of courier ship Hermes to what appears to be an empty, drifting troop vessel–empty except for the blood and gore spattered corridors and a lone survivor locked in a holding cell. Drawn to the handsome, traumatized man, the crew’s comm officer, Isaac Ozawa, makes Turk his personal responsibility, offering him the kindness and warmth he needs after the horror he experienced.
Isaac knows firsthand what it’s like to be different and an outcast, and this cements their bond. Once a promising pilot, Isaac was left with a damaged body when his brain didn’t meld with the high-tech implant needed to fly fighter ships. Turk’s brain is no better. The result of a military experiment gone wrong, his natural abilities have been augmented to a dangerous degree.
When an amoral, power-hungry admiral kidnaps Isaac and uses him to convince Turk to become the cataclysmic weapon he’s hungered for, it will take Turk’s strength, the ingenuity of the Hermes crew, the help of the enigmatic Drak’tar, and Isaac’s own stubborn will to save them.

Isaac Ozawa had everything to look forward to as an exceptional pilot until an implant in his head went wrong. Implant failure usually ended in death but for Isaac it meant continuing on unable to do what he loved and being plagued by migraines and blackouts. He now works as a communication officer on board the Hermes, a commercial vessel.
When the Hermes receives a distress call and goes to investigate they find blood and carnage and one lone survivor. A Corzin fighter named Turk is found distressed but alive in a locked cell and is taken back to the Hermes for treatment. There is an instant connection between Turk and Isaac but neither man is trustful of the other and Isaacs first priority, along with the rest of the crew, is to get Turk to safety and find out what happened.
I didn’t expect quite such a sweet love story to form after so much blood and gore. By the time they have got Turk safely to a space station where he can be de-briefed neither man wants to be separated. Turk has made a commitment though and is a man of honour and won’t be entirely free for another 2 years.
Suddenly everything goes wrong. Isaac is kidnapped and tortured and left dying, it looks like the implant will finally get the better of him. Turk is enraged, his deal broken by deception, and escapes with Isaac on the Hermes and heads home hoping the healers will be able to help Isaac.
Turks home….wow!! The world building created by the author was fantastic! A Utopia left untouched by the outside world where everyone knows their role and brings something useful to the dynamic. As Isaac starts to heal he realises he will never again be the same man.
Turk may have escaped but his freedom is short lived as evil tracks him down and intends to obliterate everything that is sacred to him. The fight is on and if the Corzin are to survive they will have to put into action what they have spent years preparing for and protect what is precious to them.
