When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

My View:

Over at Prism Book Reviews we have a spreadsheet listing books we may or may not be interested in reviewing. I had looked at this one over a number of days, but not being familiar with the author kept leaving it and then returning for another look. This could certainly have been one of those times that I would have been kicking myself later in time if I hadn’t finally requested it from Brandilyn!

This book was a fantastic surprise! Great writing, fantastic world building, two interesting and very real Mc’s alongside a great team of secondary characters and an unusual slant on shifters. As book 1 in a new series it did exactly what it should have done and left me desperate for book 2.

Shifters have not always been around and now that they are they are not always popular with humans. They are known as Therians. As in real life anything different lends itself to hatred and derision, sometimes through fear but often through hatred. To quell both the fear and the hatred a new branch of policing known as the THIRDS, which is staffed by Therian and human is running and dealing with therian crimes.
Dexter Daley is a fair and honest detective who works for the Human Police Force (HPF). When his partner commits an horrendous crime against a Therian youth Dexter turns police witness and his life changes for the worse. Becoming the most hated man on the force and beaten more than once for his honesty and morality Dexters options are becoming few. He fears he will lose his job to keep the peace but he is instead transferred to the THIRDS and into the toughest team there.

His team leader is Brodie Sloane a Therian Jaguar and alpha male. Their first meeting doesn’t go well and neither holds a high opinion of the other, although the sexual tension is already mounting. As the investigation into 3 murders takes place the plot is cleverly interwoven and will keep you guessing until the end. There is tension from the team, tension from the job and even tension from dreams. The sexual tension is off the page with Brodie trying to deal with his past whilst unable to run from his future.

There is so much scope for the characters that we have been introduced to in this first book that I am very excited to see how the series progresses. The request has been sent into Brandilyn and I am sat here ( im) patiently waiting for Blood & Thunder.

  1. Thx! I normally do not like sy-fi but I love shifter so will be waiting for this one to hit AZ or BN then buy!

  2. Is the comment contest open for this one? The review was posted in July, but the blurb at the bottom mentions a giveaway. I’d be interested in the giveaway for this title.
