Venomous shifters and anti-venoms? I love shifter stories and this one seemed like it would be something different from most shifter tales.
Title: Intoxicated by the King Cobra (Venomous Mates #1)
Author: Jackie Nacht
Cover Artist: Melody Simmons
Rating: 4.75 of 5 Stars
It’s been seventy-five years since the toxins dropped and the world became dark. No one knows this more than Reese and his friends. On the verge of starvation, Reese will do the unthinkable—he’ll steal away into Venom City to get the food they so urgently need.
Kalder’s been infected by the cobra venom, and even as a third generation, the toxin has passed on to physically alter future generations forevermore. Known as ruthless and cruel, he’ll kill anyone that threatens those he protects. When a desperate anti-venom shows up to steal food, his world is irrevocably changed.
I loved it. What an amazing start to this series. Ms. Nacht has set up venom city quite nicely and has created a dark, dangerous world that is unlike anything I have encountered thus far. She has created dangerous venoms and innocent anti-venoms. The venoms are ruthless, violent, and hardened. Their appearance borders on creepy, with a side of HOT. They will do anything to keep what is theirs, including torture and kill.
While this is very unique, it is also similar to most shifter tales in that mates are known by scent and there is an instant connection that leads the characters quickly from lust to loving their mate. Finding ones mate also has the ability to turn the most hardened venom into a tender protector and provider. I really loved how Ms. Nacht portrayed the mating. I was unsure how a romance would work since the venoms are so much like mafia lords, but she made it work.
This novella was short but well developed. Ma. Nacht gave great insight into the world, social structure, venom/anit-venom characteristics, behaviors, etc. She provided a great set-up for the continuation of this series. I felt the ending was a little abrupt but it left things perfectly set for the plot to continue as well as for the next mating pair to immerge. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves shifters. It is well worth the read. I cannot wait for the next one!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
