Moments later the world went black as the coffin’s lid slid into place.
Sebastian breathed shallowly, trying to practice moving his chest as little as possible.
Through the slight crack where the lid was not fully seated, he heard the shouting. Anthony was angry.
“You slight my honor with your unsaid accusations. What delusion haunts you if you cannot even take the word of a doctor?”
Parson’s reply was quieter, and Sebastian had to strain to hear. “I must be certain, my lord. I do not know Dr. Thomas.”
Wallace must have shoved the lid as it clicked into place, and Sebastian couldn’t hear the words anymore, only muffled noises. A few minutes passed, and Sebastian lay perfectly still. The lid was pushed aside, scraping open.
“As you can see, Parson, my wife’s body. Are you happy now?” spat Anthony.
“Uncover the face.”
Anthony didn’t argue, and Sebastian thought he knew the hard, angry look Anthony would be wearing. Sebastian held his breath as Anthony removed the shroud, revealing his face.
“Happy?” asked Anthony.
“Yes. Apologies, my lord, but I had to be sure.”
The shroud fell back over his face and the lid replaced, although not fully as Sebastian could still hear the conversation. He took a shallow breath, trying to get his heart to stop thundering.
“You killed her, you and whoever started those rumors. Bronwyn was already ill, and this additional turmoil finished her,” snarled Anthony. “Get out. Wallace will see you off my land.”
Sebastian lay as still as possible, waiting in the darkness for Parson to leave. To Sebastian’s relief, Anthony removed the lid of the coffin fully and pulled at the shroud. He stroked his hand down Sebastian’s face. “Are you well?”
“I’ll be better when I’m out of this coffin.”
Sebastian Hewel has never been happier. But his life playing the role of his twin sister Bronwyn, the wife of Anthony Redbourn, Earl of Crofton, is about to change. Rumors abound that Bronwyn is using witchcraft to enthrall her husband, and false evidence has been found. Practicing witchcraft is a crime that could have Bronwyn brought in for questioning by the sheriff, and that would reveal Sebastian and Anthony’s secret.
Together they must decide whether it is time to lay Bronwyn to rest. Anthony intends to ensure that whoever implicated Bronwyn pays for the treacherous deed. Whatever happens, Sebastian and Anthony must prepare to face an unknown future together.
