A Grand Prix Romance by Devon Rhodes, T.A. Chase ~ Book Review by Paisley

I was drawn to the title of this book because I love motor sports, and I especially enjoy watching Formula One racing. I have always been captivated by the international appeal of the drivers, the teams, and even the sponsors. So what could be more international in flavor than a romance between a Formula One driver and a very sexy soccer star?

This is book seven in the International Men of Sports series.

Two men who share a passion for speed find out what can happen if they slow down enough for a Grand romance.

Paolo’s more than just a football player—he plays at life. But underneath the party boy image, he’s well aware that his career is stagnating and a big move might be needed. Before anything like that can be decided, though, he’s going to enjoy his annual trip to Monte Carlo for the Grand Prix.

The only thing Johann loves more than his Formula One racing is gambling in the glittering atmosphere of Monaco. This year, he finds that high stakes applies to more than just cards—his heart is going all in and if he bets it all and loses, it could cost him everything.

My View:

The majority of this story takes place in Monaco, and that makes it the perfect backdrop for some jet setting fun. The Grand Prix of Monaco is an iconic road race, and the idea of two men falling in love during the event is very creative. I think one of the things that I loved most about this story is how it is filled with great descriptions of a lifestyle that I can only ever read about. Gambling in high stakes games, traveling around Europe in top-end sport cars, and a snapshot of life in the fast lane. All of the things you would expect from an international sports icon or mega-millionaire on vacation.

On the downside I found the details about gambling, along with all of the information about racing a bit taxing. There was a lot of stuff thrown at me for less than 200 pages. Then there is the fact that one of the main characters is a soccer star, so there was information relevant to that aspect too. For a fairly straightforward love story (which I do enjoy) there were a lot of supporting details.  Don’t get me wrong – I think the authors did a commendable job of building the setting and offering some depth to the tale, but it was a bit off balanced in that way. I guess what I am trying to say is that for a book that I was able to read in an afternoon, and included a whirlwind romance built in less than a week, there were a ton of supporting details and that weighed it down a bit.

I was a also overwhelmed by all of the people that were introduced to me at the beginning of the story. There were a lot of characters to meet. It turns out that some of them were featured in an earlier book in the series. This being book seven I guess that was bound to happen. I have not read any of the other books in this series, and it wasn’t necessary in order to enjoy this one. I will say that the theme has peaked my interest, and I would like to explore some of the other stories. I mean, what is hotter than two sports superstars and international romance?

So, if you enjoy whirlwind romances set in exotic locations I green light this book. The men are interesting, the sex is hot but not excessively never-ending, and the story is fun and rather romantic at times. I think this could be an awesome beach read, or the type of book you can take with you on vacation, or even better just read it for a little vacation from reality.
