Forever Man Playlist:
1. Where the Streets Have No Name by U2
This song sounds like what it feels like to drive through the high desert near Santa Fe. I imagine Cole driving out to the recording studio in Galisteo, blasting this music. Also, there are many streets in New Mexico that have no name.
2. Honey Please by Dan Wilson
When I heard this song for the first time, I immediately thought of Ren and Cole. It’s a song about no longer being able to hide the love you feel, asking your lover to meet you and run away. It sounded like a song Cole would write for Ren, so full of longing.
3. Drive by Melissa Ferrick
This is just about the sexiest song on the planet. It’s all about sex, actually. I listened to it on repeat every time I dove into writing a sex scene.
4. Make You Feel My Love by Adele
This cover of the Bob Dylan song is my favorite love song. I imagined Alegra, the superstar singer in my story, singing it for Ren and Cole. I love the line, “I’ve known it from the moment that we met, no doubt in my mind where you belong.” Again, it’s a song about longing for the one you love, but it’s so pure, so confident.
5. Ho Hey by the Lumineers
This song reminds me of something Cole would write–fun, catchy, a bit folksy. When I heard the lyrics, I was gobsmacked because the lyrics fit perfectly with the story, right down to mentioning the bus from Chinatown to Boston, which is mentioned in Forever Man. Ultimately, the song is about reminding the one you love–who is with another man–that you belong together. That’s Ren and Cole.
6. A Case of You by Joni Mitchell
I’ve always loved this song, and I mentioned Ren and Cole dancing to the Prince version, in the story. It reminds me of how they felt about each other when apart, when they weren’t even in close contact anymore.
7. Half-Boyfriend by Jay Brannan
I’m a huge Jay Brannan fan, ever since I saw him in Short Bus. I imagine Ren’s voice sounds like Jay’s voice, so I often listened to Jay’s music while writing Forever Man.
8. Someone Like You by Adele
This song exemplifies how Ren and Cole felt about each other prior to re-connecting in Santa Fe. In fact, the song they dance to the first night at The Pink Adobe, the one that brings them together, that provides the soundtrack for their first kiss, is modeled after “Someone Like You.” It’s about an old friend, the one you compare all future lovers to, the one you’ll always love best.
9. Crazy Love by Van Morrison
I’ve always loved this song. It reminds me of those easy, relaxed Sundays with a new lover. I played it when writing the scenes after Ren and Cole confess their true feelings for each other.
10. New York by Snow Patrol
Another song about longing! Ren lives in New York, so it connects to Forever Man on that level. Beyond that, it’s a song about missing someone and needing to know what will happen next. Waiting on your love, who is far away, to make a decision.
11. All Kinds by Dan Wilson
This is how I imagine Cole thinks about Ren when they’re younger–at prep school, and later, at different colleges. It’s a love song he would write for Ren.
Ren turns to see Cole standing not five feet away, a bit out of breath.
“Did you mean it?” Ren asks.
“You’re in love with me?”
Ren doubles over again, trying to catch his breath. Cole crosses to him, rubbing his back but saying nothing. After a moment, Ren straightens out and asks, “How long?”
“I want us to be together—”
“No. How long have you been in love with me?”
The answer to this one question is all Ren needs to know. Because this man, this friend, this lover of his has always given in to whims and drama and intensity, and Ren has to be sure that he is not that. He has to be sure that this is not new.
Cole steps into Ren’s space, tilts his chin up and kisses him. The kiss is firm, an answer, a promise.
“I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with you.”
A bond forged in Catholic school, an unspoken attraction that outlasts years of separation and other relationships.
Ren and Cole never acted on that thing that always bubbled beneath the surface of their friendship, not until a chance encounter in a Santa Fe bar and a song that would tip the scales forced them to confront their feelings. Will the influence of a music superstar, a New York socialite and a mystical property manager finally bring them together, or will a history of missed opportunities, their own fears and an impending wedding keep them apart? Can they just have one night, and then walk away?
Forever Man is a story of the consequences of the choices we make, and how the courage to change can last a lifetime.
