Title: Last Chance Charlie
Author: Ryan Loveless
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: Bree Archer
Rating: 4 of 5 Stars
Charlie Corcoran is the best thing about twenty-five-year old Zach Prentiss’s life. Sure, they’ve never met. Charlie’s never seen Zach from the neck up, but because of Charlie, for a few hours Zach can forget about his sick father, his falling grades, and his dwindling clientele who don’t like that he’s a rentboy who ages. With Charlie, he talks online about comics, cars, and movies. Then a new client arrives. It’s Charlie wanting sex tips… for a date with Zach. Zach goes through with the appointment, convinced it’s over if Charlie recognizes him. However, he doesn’t have long to nurse his broken heart or worry about Charlie’s before Charlie is back, wanting to take him out, introduce him to Mom, and treat him like he’s decent.
I enjoyed the only other Ryan Loveless title I read, so I had to pick up Last Chance Charlie when it was available. If you have read Ethan, Who Loved Carter, this story is different, but the emotions evoked harkened back to Ethan for me. I found myself with that little prickly feeling in the back of my eyes on at least one occasion.
Zach is not a completely lovable character, but there is something damaged about him that makes your heart just go out to him. You want what is best for him; you want him to be able to find better, but you see the fear that he harbors that he never will find that better. Charlie is absolutely adorable. I have no idea what he sees in Zach, and I would like to know a little more of why he is so in love with Zach. That being said; I felt the connection between them and wanted them to find their happily ever after.
The secondary characters in Last Chance were also very entertaining, I really liked Laurie and Michael, together and apart. Last Chance is a well-rounded, entertaining, and emotional read.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
