“A Mates Series Story”
Zev Hassick is surprised and confused when he finds himself attracted to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. Zev is the son of the pack Alpha, regarded as the strongest wolf in generations, born to lead. And everyone knows a male shifter has to mate with a female of his own kind to keep his humanity. So shifters can’t be gay, right?
Jonah Marvel wants a relationship with Zev, his best friend, the man he has loved since childhood. It wasn’t easy to maintain that relationship over years spent living apart while Jonah studied to become a doctor. And then things grow more difficult when Jonah becomes his own patient. Before he can make a life with Zev, he has to understand his past and cure the unexplained ailments that plague him.
Zev and Jonah know they’re destined for each other, but they’re facing traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets that may threaten any future together.
My View – Story:
Zev first meets Jonah when they are both very young; in fact Jonah is only a year old. Zev is in his shifted form, a mere pup, but is drawn to Jonah from that first moment. Their first few years are spent like this – Zev in wolf form and Jonah a young human boy.
The story initially is told in flashbacks. Zev’s pack is very traditional and doesn’t have a lot to do with humans. When Zev is allowed to attend a local human high school it means a lot more time spent around Jonah, who he can finally friend properly in his human form. He can also protect Jonah from any perceived dangers.
Zev lives his life under pressure. His family are becoming more and more vocal about his need to find a mate and ‘tie’. As a male wolf he needs to do this or his human side will be lost. As the future alpha he needs to do this to satisfy the pack. Zev is aware his wolf is restless and that he is losing control but his is positive that Jonah is his mate and he wants no other. Zev will have to wait for Jonah to return to him after his 4 years at college.
4 Years become 12 as Jonah extends his course. Although they see each other as often as possible Zev has only a tenuous hold on his wolf and is finding it increasingly difficult to be without his mate. The mating bond is really pushed to the limit in this story! There is a lot of heavy petting in those 12 years but no going all the way. To ‘tie’ and complete the bond would leave them unable to live without each other and Zev insists that Jonah finishes his schooling.
Towards the end of his college life Jonah starts to have health issues and thinks he has something wrong with him. It is time to question his father about his mother’s health history. His mother died when Jonah was born but recently Jonah has been having recurring nightmares about her. Little does he know what a can of worms he is opening, nor does he expect his sudden interest in a woman he never knew to have such an impact on him and Zev.
This book is full of emotions. It is a true friend to lover story that takes years to come to fruition. Their love is tried and tested over all those years but they truly are bound to each other in more ways than one. They are also very hot together when they finally get the chance!!
My View – Narration:
I have listened to a few books by Charlie David now and he is fast becoming one of my favourites. He speaks clearly and is very easy to listen to. He gives his all to the characters and makes the story come alive.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
