When Henry Cortland, the Earl of Brenleigh, comes to London to fulfill his duty and take a wife, he also decides to first fulfill his most secret and suppressed desires. He wants to spend just one night with a man. A sultry encounter with a handsome stranger surpasses all his hopes, leaving him certain that he will live off the memories for the rest of his life.

Lord Richard Avery has grown tired of his endless string of casual relationships, yet an argument with his lover sends him right into the arms of a total stranger. But Henry is not like any lover he has ever had, and the attraction between them is more than physical. Richard wants more, but can their mutual attraction overcome Henry’s family obligations and sense of duty? Can Richard convince him to follow his heart rather than the demands of family and title?

Josie Goodreads’s View:

One Indulgence by Lydia Gastrell is an intense and beautifully written regency romance.

Henry Courtland knows he has a responsibility to his title, his lands and the people who depend on him and his dying father extracts a promise that he will marry and produce an heir. Henry’s own desires and happiness count for nothing. Before he marries though Henry wants one perfect night with a man, a night to fuel memories to sustain him for the rest of his life.

Richard Avery wants more than meaningless one night encounters, he’s lonely and he’s tired of having no one to love, to share his life with. When fate brings Richard and Henry together neither man is quite ready for what transpires. Richard can’t settle for one night, but Henry isn’t free to love him, regardless of how much he wants too. Can the two men navigate the treacherous waters life puts in their path? Can they reach out for happiness without betraying those who need and love them?

The first meeting between Richard and Henry is where it all starts and it was deliciously hot and sexy, but also very sweet. Richard had been hurt and was looking for a distraction and he certainly got more than he bargained for with Henry, who was perfectly drawn as the vulnerable and shy young virgin who just wants to understand what it would be like to let his own desires fly. Afterwards Henry tries to put the night behind him and carry on as expected but Richard, who is enamoured by the young man just can’t let him go. I won’t say much more about the plot as I want readers to unravel it themselves, it’s far too delicious to spoil and the ending is very much a HFN with a hint of a HEA, or as much of one as two men in 19th century England could have.
As much as I loved and cheered on both Richard and Henry the story was enriched for me by the very real and wonderfully written secondary characters, Richards sister Anne and his brother Tommy, the Duke of Culfrey, they complimented Richard perfectly and I loved Anne immensely. Then Anne’s forlorn suitor the gentle but not to be outdone Benjamin Cayson and his loyal sister Emily, she reminded me of a terrier protecting what’s hers. And let’s not forget Julian Garrott and Samuel Shaw, Richards’s friend and bitter contemporary. Now that’s a story I would love to read, if Ms Gastrell is looking to continue in this universe, Julian and Samuel, either together or with separate partners, I felt there was so much more to both characters not yet explained or explored.

With my love of historical romance I think it’s safe to say that I expected to love One Indulgence but it surpassed my expectations and I adored it completely. It’s a story that grabbed me from the first page, one of those frustrating stories that you want to read quickly, but also savour slowly, and Ms Gastrell is now on my auto buy list. I hope she continues in this universe as I do want more, much more, I want to know what happens to all these characters, I want to see them grow and develop. For all lovers of historical MM romance One Indulgence is highly recommended and not to be missed.
