Five years undone in just five days.
Dave Mitchell and Christian Taylor are on a mission from their alpha—to discover what happened to a pack of Argent shifters thirteen years ago. Away from their pack and out of their usual routine, they find underlying tensions in their relationship coming to the surface.
When their investigation leads them to the resident pack, Christian seeks respite from his demons by throwing himself eagerly into the cage-fighting ring the pack runs. He knows Dave hates him to fight, but he also knows Dave will understand. Dave always understands.
But when Dave meets a kindred spirit among the pack members, all Christian’s certainties come crashing down around him. It becomes clear that their relationship might not survive this. And when things between them reach crisis point and the local pack gets involved, it may prove to be the death of more than just their relationship.
Riding the Whirlwind is the 5th story in the Strength of the Pack series by Joy Lynn Fielding. In this novel, we finally get some insight into Dave and Christian’s relationship. They have been together since before the start of the series, so their story is a bit different than the previous 4.
Christian and Dave’s mating shows that mates can become complacent and unhappy. Everything is not perfect just because fate stepped in and got two shifters together. They still need to communicate with one another for things to work out in the end. I liked seeing this side of things. It is different than most shifter tales out there.
I also thought Ms. Fielding did a great job of developing her characters. She included background to show why they behave as they do, and then allowed the plot to drive the characters to growing out of their insecurities and past hangups. It wasn’t forced but felt as if the character growth was the natural outcome of the events of the story.
The story picks up the overall series plot ARC and moves it forward. There is good continuity and Ms. Fielding does a great job of giving just enough new information to satisfy the reader while still keeping things interesting and mysterious.
Overall, I enjoyed this addition to the Strength of the Pack series. Now that the men have discovered who they are and what they want in life, I look forward to seeing how Christian and Dave interact with the rest of the pack in future stories. I have a feeling these changes will only enhance the story going forward.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
