Seriously ill, in pain with no money for medication or food, Dennis sets out to North Beach to drown but ends up being saved more ways than he can imagine.
Walking along the beach one evening, Luca Ferone encounters a body floating in the water. Being told to kiss off after rescuing the man isn’t what he expected.
Dennis O’Shea was ready to end it all. Being saved wasn’t in his plans. One look in Dennis’ eyes is all Luca needs to be lost. He won’t let anything get in the way until Dennis is his. Dennis doesn’t go easily but realizes that Luca is a man used to getting his own way. Can the two find their way together?
Since I sat in my small town’s theatre and watched the movie Cinderella as a young girl, I have been a sucker for a “handsome prince” sweeping in to save their beloved. Ridiculously rich and gorgeous Luca finds gravely ill Dennis floating near the beach after Dennis’ unsuccessful suicide attempt. Luca takes him home, says “Mine!” and instantly falls for the nearly drowned man, and nurtures him back to health.
The Drowning has the potential to be a gem – a swoon-worthy story of a penniless, downtrodden and frail beauty who is saved by the rich, handsome prince. However, the story fails to fulfill its promise. Luca and Dennis very quickly fall in “instalove”, which is completely unbelievable. Luca is much too possessive for my taste, and Dennis is not very intuitive. He immediately claims Dennis as his, and freely spends his riches while fretting that Dennis will figure out he’s Richy Rich. I am also bothered by the silliness of Dennis somehow not immediately realizing that Luca is loaded even though he’s living with him in his fantastic mansion with in-home staff, and an on-call concierge physician.
Unfortunately I never truly engaged with Luca and Dennis, and their love story is too … too. They fall in love too quickly, Luca is too rich and clingy, Dennis is too clueless, and their “happily ever after” is too predictable.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
