Xavier makes a lot of people nervous. The rest, he flat-out scares. More than his hulking, tattooed body, it’s his predator’s gaze that makes people feel vulnerable, as if he had the power to read their thoughts and see their soul. For his lovers, it’s Xavier’s ravenous appetite for all things carnal—for the taste of flesh under his tongue and the feel of a trembling body under his control, for whispered pleas and muffled cries—that makes him dangerous.
But recently, driven by a festering rage against the men who attacked his sister a decade ago, Xavier has developed a taste for a different kind of hunt and conquest: stalking men who do truly bad things and punishing the predators he sniffs out. The problem with vigilante justice, though, is sometimes the man in your trap is innocent.
Carson suspects he’s playing a risky game with dangerous men. But the lies are convincing, especially when they’re slipped to him among hundred dollar bills. He never guessed how big and dark the secret hidden under all the lies and money could be. And he has no idea he’s not the predator, but the prey, until it’s too late.
And you can’t beg for mercy when there’s a gag in your mouth.
But when Carson escapes from Xavier’s trap, he’s forced to accept that Xavier is far from his most dangerous enemy. Xavier may even hold the key to overcoming the painful past that has kept Carson prisoner for almost two decades.
This is the second time in almost as many weeks that I have written this BUT this is a book that you will either love or hate. There is seriously no middle ground with these characters and a lot of things that happen are so wrong yet you can’t help holding on tight and hoping for the best!
Xavier is not your typical hero in any way. He is dark, scary and quite honestly really fucking disturbed! Xavier is a tattoo artist and initially that is his only redeeming feature! If he is your friend he will be one of the best people you could have on your side but if he is your enemy your card is marked and your days are probably numbered. He is also a sadist both in and out of the bedroom.
An attack on his sister Elena 10 years ago still eats at his soul and he will do anything in his power to ensure she is kept safe. He loves her like no other, he protects her like no other and he feels he failed her like no other. Elena is currently working on a human trafficking case and when she witnesses an attack one evening near her apartment Xavi is once again drawn in to act as her protector. In his sometimes twisted sense of reality he copies files from her computer relating to her current case and then goes off to work undercover to try and help her piece together the evidence. He really is a law unto himself.
Part of going undercover involves him working as a bouncer at club that seems to front for the trafficking gang. Here we meet all sorts of insidious characters who do despicable things to young women who are essentially still children. This makes for some pretty hard reading! Xavi also meets a bartender called Carson who is lured into the whole mess through his naivety. Carson has his own dark and damaging secrets from his past and is almost as unstable as Xavi but without the sadism and god complex.
These two men are thrown together through manipulation and it ends very badly for Carson. He will end up bound, gagged and tortured for three days in Xavi’s basement. This is not the worst of it for Carson though as afterwards he will have to confront himself and who he is which is far more painful for him and takes him back to his childhood. He will also have to face the fact that he is seriously attracted not only to his captor Xavi but also the things that he can offer.
These two men feed off each other and it is dangerous, dirty, scary and probably very wrong but it seems to work, at least for a little while. They also have to face their pasts, avoid being killed and be totally naked and honest with each other.
There are no punches pulled in this book…not a one. It is twisted and full of Bad Things!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
