Caroline’s View:

I got what I was expecting and then so much in this final part but the way Amy Lane put the words onto the page left me crying big ugly tears. This lady just took me and wrung me out from about 20% in! This is a big bag of feels as the past finally collides with the present.

There is a lot about forgiveness now we are drawing to the end. Thank god the boys, especially Mackey, have grown up so much in the last 12 months or I don’t think they would have survived. As Grant grows weaker we see them all laying the ghosts of their past to rest and reconnecting, but it is so sad to think there is so little time left.
There are a few surprises along the way and it felt right that at the end Grant finally took control of what little life he had left and made sure that things would be ok when he was no longer here. It felt like he was giving his family back just a little bit of grief for the way he had been treated all those years and at the same time leaving something of himself with his ‘brothers’.

Trav may not have known Grant and may have never wanted to meet him given the fact that he had previously meant so much to Mackey but he was an absolute star when he needed to step up. He battled between compassion and jealousy but held it together for his boys, Grant and himself in the end.

I was dreading the funeral given that the book already had me sobbing but I finally laughed. It was so right! Through the band Grant grabbed back control of his life and their words left me feeling like all those boys were going to make it. It was their last hurrah to a town that had treated them all so badly!

The bonus scene in this one was like the cherry on the cake and when Mackey finally shows Trav’s parents the real Mackey Sanders it was just perfect. I can’t believe it is over but it has been one hell of a trip!
