Blurb:

The average adult male is approximately 60% water. Blood tastes salty as more than two thirds of the sodium circulating throughout your body is carried in arteries and veins. Which means that your heart is like a miniature ocean within your chest. Chaz Brenchley has not only been awarded the British Fantasy Society’s August Derleth Award but knows all too well the storms and dangers of the heart: the lofty desires, the grieving nadirs, the tempest of love. In Bitter Watters, his first short story collection devoted to gay readers, Brenchley offers men fantastical instances to effleurer, to break for taller timber, to drown in emotions. And while not every tale in this breathtaking collection involves the sea, tears and bloodshed still need to be navigated.

Leisa’s View:

Some books and short story collections are light fluff and easy to breeze through quickly reading, while others grip the reader emotionally and demand the reader’s undivided attention. Bitter Waters is a collection of British author Chaz Brenchley’s short stories that definitely falls into the category of evoking the reader’s passion. These stories are largely centered around men struggling to navigate love and loss, as well as their relationship with the sea.

The stories vary greatly with differing genres – these include historical, fantastical, and paranormal. Many of the characters have experienced great personal loss, and their stories are often emotionally raw. Also, some characters appear in more than one story, which is an interesting way to associate the individual stories into a cohesive collection. Every single story is powerful in its own unique way and unforgettable.

I highly recommend that you read this non-formulaic collection of stories from this remarkable author. His stories and characters will forever remain in your heart.
