On the cusp of his twenty-fifth birthday, Bo Sanford grows frustrated with his directionless life. Slaving away at his father’s construction company all week and partying every weekend leaves him little time for introspection, but he knows it’s time for a change. When his best friend, Mac, drags him to a college party, Bo catches sight of a girl. But not just any girl—the girl of his dreams: a delicate blonde-haired beauty with a pink scarf and a smile that promises warmth and humor. There’s just one problem: she isn’t a girl.
Even after Bo discovers the truth, he keeps seeing Erick, and the choice to follow his heart despite the obstacles has profound repercussions on not only his sense of self but his relationship with his family and even his job. Being with Erick makes him all the more determined to be his own man and claw his way out from under his father’s thumb.
But Erick faces choices of his own: the choice to get involved with someone redefining his sexuality, the choice to trust again, and even the choice to believe love can last beyond the temporary.
My View – Story:
I don’t know what I was expecting going into Choices and Changes, but it isn’t what I got. What I got, I think, was much better than what I expected. K.L. Belanger is a new author for me. Actually, if her Goodreads profile is anything to go by, she is a new author, full stop. I hope Choices and Changes is not her only foray into the M/M romance world.
Many boxes were ticked for me with the story in Choices and Changes. It is a somewhat slow-burn romance, but not because the two MCs are oblivious or frustratingly obtuse. They are both going into things with open eyes and just letting their friendship and relationship develop naturally. I like that Bo is a strong character and even though he knows things aren’t going to go his way, he doesn’t let that stop him going after the things he wants in life and love. I appreciate that while Erick has been hurt in the past, he doesn’t let that stop him finding a future… even if he doesn’t quite believe there is a future to be had.
What Choices perfect? No. There are some things I would have liked to have seen handled a little differently. For one, I would love to have watched Erick stand up to his ex a little more. Not that I don’t believe that scene played out realistically, I just wanted more for him… I guess. On Bo’s side of things, I don’t know if I can completely believe the ease with which he accepted his sexuality. I know some might balk at it, but I think it was sweet and just shows Bo’s personality and his taking the reins of his life.
As I already said, I would love to see more from this author, whether to continue Bo & Erick’s story or to start a new one… or maybe a prequel for a certain other couple which will remain nameless for fear of spoilers…
My View – Narration:
So I don’t often give narration only three stars. Usually, I can find something to like about it and praise. This time I just had a really hard time with the narration. This was my first Jonathan Waters narrated story. I think I would enjoy his narration for a different story. His voice is easy enough to listen to, but it was just all wrong for Bo and Erick. He was too patrician for the decidedly blue-collar main characters. He would be great for a regency romance.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
