Title: Precious Metals
Author: LA Witt
Cover Artist: April Lee
Genre/Sub-Genre: Historical, Steampunk
For Constable Paul Benson of the North-West Mounted Police, monotony is a blessing. As a provision inspector below the Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike Gold Rush, he’s seen miserable conditions and gold fever turn civilized prospectors into madmen.
Joseph Starling is on his way to the Klondike to find the men who savagely beat him, murdered his eldest brother, and stole their mining machine. They’ll kill his youngest brother if Joseph doesn’t operate the machine for them—it won’t work without him. With time running out, Joseph must purchase an expensive ticket aboard a crash-prone airship. But the station is miles away through dangerous terrain.
Under orders, Paul grudgingly escorts Joseph, but quickly finds himself intrigued by the young man. As they make their way toward Juneau, it’s not just the need for warmth that drives them closer together. But neither man can draw an easy breath until they make it to the gold fields . . . and there’s no guarantee that Joseph’s brother will still be alive when they do.

NOTE: I am in the process of relocating, and of course, I picked this week to make the drive from Nebraska to Seattle. As such, I’ll be at the mercy of hotel wifi and 3G signal in the middle of nowhere, but I will do my best to catch up whenever I’m stopped and/or when I reach my destination!
We are here to talk about Precious Metals, what can you tell us about it?
Basically, it’s a story about a man who’s determined to save his kidnapped brother, to the point he’s willing to go out into the Klondike with no team and no supplies. Paul, a Mountie, is sent to escort him to an airship in hopes of getting him to the gold fields before something happens to his brother. Naturally, that doesn’t go according to plan. And, I mean, two boys out in the wilderness together with no other way to stay warm…
Tell us more about Paul and Joseph.
Paul is a Mountie who just wants to do his job and stay warm. At first, he thinks Joseph is a dumb, stubborn kid, but it quickly becomes apparent that Joseph is extremely intelligent, especially when it comes to technology. He’s lost one brother, and he’s scared to death of losing the younger one, and he’s definitely not expecting to fall in love with anyone. Especially not Paul.
You write across tropes, sub-genres, and even genres. How do you keep it all straight?
ADHD? Well, okay, that’s partially true. Honestly, every story is completely separate in my mind. It’s like if you think about some movies you’ve seen. You can probably keep Star Wars and Pretty Woman separate in your head. Or Indiana Jones and Nightmare on Elm Street. That’s basically how it is for me – the stories, tropes, and genres don’t really bleed into each other. When I shift gears from one book to another – which I sometimes do multiple times in the same day – I shift completely, just like someone would if they took out the Iron Man DVD and put in Toy Story. Which I now realize makes me sound insane.
If you were to travel to the time Precious Metals is set, what is the first thing you would do?
Get the heck out of Alaska on the first airship to Hawaii!
If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
Whatever superpower it would take to join the Avengers. Mmm, Hawkeye…
If the world were going to end tomorrow, how would you spend your last night on earth?
Probably playing Cards Against Humanity. Because hey, if you’re going to go down, you might as well go down laughing at horrible things.

About the Author:
L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.
