Title: Random Acts
Author: Mia Kerick
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: Reese Dante
Genre/Sub-Genre: Contemporary, M/M Romance
Bradley Zelder can’t find his way in life. After struggling for nearly a decade, he has yet to complete his college degree. Working as a school custodian, living in blue-collar Landsbury, MA, his love life is as empty as the rest of his existence. But on his way home after another disastrous date, his truck breaks down in upscale Oceanside. When he thinks life can’t get any worse, a man who is the epitome of Boston elite and everything Bradley finds attractive and intimidating helps him move his truck to the side of the road. Ashamed of his lot in life, Bradley almost lets the opportunity slip away, but he comes to his senses in time and tracks Caleb down.
From a random act of kindness, romance begins to grow, filling all the dark corners of Bradley’s empty life—until a random act of violence threatens to take it all away. Bradley must step up and be the man Caleb believes him to be. Caleb rescued him from a life without hope. Can Bradley rescue him in return?
Random Questions from Random Readers:
I’ve never been particularly comfortable with the random parts of life. Like my character Caleb Jorde, in Random Acts, I would prefer to know what’s coming in life and to be afforded with plenty of opportunity to structure my world into clear emotional categories in order to prepare. That way I’d be ready for any tragedy and any joy. For anything and everything life could toss my way—this girl would be ready.
But maybe that’s not such a good idea after all… Maybe it’s best to savor the awesome moments as they occur, and to deal with the hardships on a need to be dealt with basis. Maybe life can be random and maybe that’s a good thing.
Maybe that good part of random can start with these random questions from my readers.
THESE ARE the toughest and most-trouble-making questions of my blog tour— Random Questions from JP Barnaby and Brandilyn Carpenter. These questions made me think hard enough for it to hurt. And hopefully not stick my foot in it too deep.
THREE m/m writers walk into a bar. They each order the other two drinks. Who are they, what do they order, and why? (Brandilyn)
Okay, so first things first- who are the writers? Well, this is my little fantasy so I’m going to go with Amy Lane, and I’m going to bend the rules here and invite Matt Boston to come along, as well. He IS a writer—an awesome BLOG (2 boys in love) writer—so he qualifies.
Here’s the deal:
I want to get Amy and Matt completely blotto, plastered, lubricated, spanked (no—not that kind of lubricated and spanked—get your minds out of the gutter) so they will tell me all of their most closely guarded secrets. I want to infiltrate Amy’s drunken mind and learn the secret to how she writes THE BEST ANGST in m/m romance, and I want to study inebriated Matt with scrutiny in order to capture what it is that makes him so damned sweet so I can create a “Matt Boston” character of my own!!! Mwahahaha!! (You, see, if I can unlock the secrets to Amy’s angst and to what makes Matt so freaking sweet, I am certain there will be a FUTURE NY TIMES BEST SELLER in 2015 for Mia Kerick.) So I order three Long Island Iced Teas. Closely followed by a trio of Zombies, and then I order Jungles Juice for one and all. I tell them we’ll order food later, and I hide the basket of pretzels, because everyone knows that empty bellies plus plenty of booze equals secrets revealed. Hehehe…
Next, I loosen up Amy and Matt with some drinking songs. They are actually surprisingly adept vocalists—Amy a lilting first soprano and Matt a vibrant tenor. I even consider starting a conga line to further relieve them of their inhibitions, but by the third time they bellow “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere”, it has become clear that this is not necessary.
At this point, Amy and Matt are spilling like two-year-olds without sippy cups. Yes, their lips may be numb, but they are rambling quite willingly. Now is the time to ask strategic questions.
“So, Amy, how do you get into the right frame of mind to write a scene that inspires your readers to tear their hair out by the roots? I mean, EXACTLY what do you do?”
“And Matt, tell me, do you frequently indulge candy, cookies, cakes and other SWEET confections?”
Cue in the evil laughter. Mwahahaha!
Time for Black Russians, wouldn’t you say?
The plant beside my chair is starting to droop in a drunken stupor, as I have very casually been feeding all of my drinks into its pot. I must keep my wits about me. This is too exceptional of an opportunity to waste on being drunk myself. Although my guests are having a mighty good time and it looks like lots of fun.
Momentarily, I wonder if my guests notice Mr. Mia videotaping this encounter from over in the corner—recording every last word for later study. If they do notice, I’ll tell Amy and Matt that he is our designated driver. Which he is. So I’m not really LYING, I’m just bending the truth a little bit.
When I feel I have garnered enough material from my victims, or, uh, guests, I order a bunch of mixed appetizers to share. Amy and Matt have earned some mozzarella sticks and stuffed mushrooms, don’t you think?
I will be sure to include Amy Lane and Matt Boston in the dedication of my best seller that is the result of this meeting.
If you could travel to any destination to research a setting for your next book – where would you go? (J.P.)
Where would I go? Hmmm… This is a great question because the setting of all of my books so far has been limited to New England and New York City because these are my stomping grounds. So, where would my dream “stomping grounds” be? I think I would like to write a story set in Key West. I have been there several times, but I don’t know it well enough to write a story there with confidence. But there is something so charming and maybe a bit mystical about Key West. You are in the USA, but it feels like you are not. And there is a sense of being on “permanent vacation” there that I love. A relaxed, Kenny Chesney/Jimmy Buffet feeling… I should reverse the order and put Jimmy Buffet first— I think Jimmy B lives in Key West. And Key West is the town where “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere” doesn’t really apply. It is always five o’ clock (happy hour) there.
So, yeah, Key West would be such a cool place to set a story. Love the Banyan Trees and the quaint streets and the mansions…and I have a thing for palm trees—I always have. And don’t forget the rum drinks. Love those, too. I think I’m going to need Mr. Mia to take me on a researching trip (no, not a vacation-LOL-what makes you think that?) very soon!!
If you could interview any person in history, living or dead, for a book – who would it be and why? (J.P.)
Another good question, JP. I think I would interview Freddie Mercury. I have always been obsessed by him and his music. I wish his life hadn’t ended so soon and I know I’m not alone. I think there are many books within Freddie Mercury’s personal stories and a long conversation with him would draw them out. And though I wouldn’t write his life story, he would inspire my mind to go in all sorts of new directions.
If you were to murder someone, how would you dispose of the body so you weren’t caught? (J.P.)
Hmmm…. I’m a lover not a fighter. Is that a cop-out answer?
About the Author:
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.
Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.
Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
Mia has published four works of adult contemporary gay romantic fiction with Dreamspinner Press and four novels of contemporary LGBT fiction with Harmony Ink Press. Mia Kerick’s books are recommended reads in the LGBT blogging/reading community, have spent many weeks on Amazon Hot New Releases and LGBT Best Sellers lists, as well as other notable bestseller lists, and have won awards for excellence in YA literature.
