Who Knows the Storm: The Vigilante Book One

Title: Who Knows the Storm: The Vigilante Book One
Author: Tere Michaels
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: Sam
Genre/Sub-Genre: M/M Romance, Mystery, Science Fiction

Blurb:

In a dystopian near future, New York City has become the epicenter of decadence—gambling, the flesh trade, a playground for the wealthy. And underneath? Crime, fueled by “Dead Bolt” a destructive designer drug. This New City is where Nox Boyet leads a double life. At night, he is the Vigilante, struggling to keep the streets safe for citizens abandoned by the corrupt government and police. During the day, he works in construction and does his best to raise his adopted teenaged son, Sam.

A mysterious letter addressed to Sam brings Nox in direct contact with “model” Cade Creel, a high-end prostitute working at the Iron Butterfly Casino. Suspicion gives way to an intense attraction as dark figures from Nox’s past and the mysterious peddlers of Dead Bolt begin to descend—and put all their lives in danger. When things spin out of control, Cade is the only person Nox can trust to help him save Sam.

The Super Power That Is UST:

Let’s face it – UST is stronger than anything that dropped Superman to his knees. He could handle pretty much all of it – the killers, the Kryptonite, the wedgies from that suit – but Lois Lane?

He fell faster than a speeding bullet.

(Sorry. I think that was from a superhero valentine I got once.)

Superheroes battle foes from the darkest depths or the farthest reaches of space. They endure injuries, death, rebooting, new costumes and painful cross-overs for merchandising sake! What is always (ALWAYS) their real downfall?

Love.

Seduced by bad boys and girls or struck by cupid for someone way out of their (justice) league, the superhero cannot escape the lure of the heart. The siren song of forbidden love, the one thing they cannot have – a happy ending – plagues and poisons the straight and narrow of the superhero’s journey. The Flash runs all over the place, knocking people out of danger but a pair of pretty eyes pushes him back into a blushing stutter.

UST: the burning lust, the constant reminder of what you cannot have but are totally going to break your own personal rules and go after. Eventually. That taunt line between “oh no, we can’t” and “oh yeah, we so are.”

One of the interesting parts of writing a superhero origin/love story is that balance. Things are never going to be peachy keen between Nox and Cade – or rather, it’s never going to be easy. Secret identities can put a cramp in dating, as will fleeing shadowy figures, random violence, explosions and “the past” which is its own big bad. In those stolen moments, we find the red hot flare of lust meeting opportunity. There’s no time for romantic dates or hand holding (unless someone is pulling someone else out of a burning building) or chatting about first loves. No, somewhere in a dark alley or hiding in an abandoned warehouse, in the shadows – a tiny second to kiss or whisper an endearment.

We wait for those little moments with baited breath and we’ll run alongside our favorite couple in hopes we get to see it again…

About the Author:

Tere Michaels unofficially began her writing career at the age of four when she learned that people got paid to write stories. It seemed the most perfect and logical job in the world and after that, her path was never in question. (The romance writer part was written in the stars—she was born on Valentine’s Day.)

It took thirty-six years of “research” and “life experience” and well… life… before her first book was published but there are no regrets (she doesn’t believe in them). Along the way, she had some interesting jobs in television, animation, arts education, PR and a national magazine—but she never stopped believing she would eventually earn her living writing stories about love.

She is a member of RWA, Rainbow Romance Writers, and Liberty States Fiction Writers. Her home base is a small town in New Jersey, very near NYC, a city she dearly loves. She shares her life with her husband, her teenaged son—who will just not stop growing—and three exceedingly spoiled cats. Her spare time is spent watching way too much sports programming, going to the movies and for long walks/runs in the park, reading her book club’s current selection, and volunteering.

Nothing makes her happier than knowing she made a reader laugh or smile or cry. It’s the purpose of sharing her work with people. She loves hearing from fans and fellow writers, and is always available for speaking engagements, visits and workshops.

  1. Thank you for another insightful post about the UST issues surrounding being a superhero, but I wonder if Cade will become the superheroes side kick so they can spend more time together, like his Robin to Batman, or Bucky & Captain America? Thank you for this giveaway – slholland22 {at} hotmail {dot} com

  2. Always love that UST! Thanks for the interesting post and contest. Have Who Knows the Storm on my TBR list.
