I hope you all have been enjoying the GRL Featured Blog Tour this year. We at Prism have been honored to be a part of it! As part of our #TeamPrism countdown to GRL I issued a challenge to the authors who have visited us throughout the year on the tour. Some couldn’t participate, but many took the challenge. I gave them each the same prompt and asked them to write a flash fic of 500 words, give or take a few hundred.
The Counselor by Brandon Witt
There are times when the five hundred dollars an hour I charge isn’t nearly enough. When the teeth are bad and they expect you to kiss. When they’re older than my dead grandmother and they want to see how many fingers I can take while they call me son. When insecurity is clothed in arrogance and they pretend I would be with them even if they weren’t paying me.
Somewhere, seemingly a lifetime ago, I’d had the notion this was going to be fun. Sexy. Hot. I was gonna be Julia Fucking Roberts with a better body and twice the sex drive. I knew better. Surely. I refuse to believe I was stupid enough to actually think Richard Gere was ever at the other end of a job. Still, what else makes you half a grand every night? More than, if the calls come in.
Without using both my hands, I can count the number of times I’ve actually enjoyed working for the money. Tonight, when Ryan opened the door, one more finger was going to be employed when I sat down to figure out the ratio of enjoyable to heinous. Truth be told, I might have been willing to pay for an hour with this guy. Ryan was gorgeous. A face like a model and a body to match, when I finally convinced him to get naked. He’s every bit as stunning as I am. For a moment, I considered the possibility of us filming together and trying to sell it for cash to some porno company.
I knew Ryan had never hired a prostitute before, he was scared shitless. He kept glancing over my shoulder like he expected an entire squadron of Chicago cops to come rushing up from behind me. No big deal, not my first rodeo. Even regulars sometimes get nervous.
It was going to be a perfect night. I was going to get fucked by the stud of the century and fucking get paid for it. A real Pretty Woman moment.
Halfway through the blowjob, they guy started to cry. Not the sobbing or hysterical bullshit, I’ve had that before too. Just tears rolling down his cheeks, trailing through the stubble. For half a moment, I thought it was guilt. Good, Mormon boy gone bad or some shit. I offered to stop, but he shook he head. Before I’d gotten him off or had the chance to roll a condom over his shaft and ride him, he pulled me up and kissed me.
Tender, sad, broken.
Then he talked. For three hours, he talked. We talked. I held him in my arms and he told me his story. I told him mine—that was a first. Before he fell asleep, I could actually see him healing. Some shattered parts beginning to weave themselves back together.
I nearly left his five hundred dollar bills on the bedside table with my number on top. I didn’t. I took the money, but did leave a part of my heart.
