Brandilyn’s View:

I will go with 4 stars on this one over all. There are a few stories that I might rate higher. There are a few that I might rate a little lower, but there wasn’t a single one under 3* for me.

When we were first asked to review this bundle, I offered it to my team. I am not a huge fan of anthologies. I generally lose interest in the entire anthology when there is one story, as there invariably is, that just doesn’t do it for me. In other words, I have no patience for anthologies. Unconditional Surrender, is not really an anthology, however. It is a collection of 13 full novellas. No vignettes or single sex scenes here. These are all fully formed stories with plot, climax, resolution, etc. They each involve a military or former military hero or two. They look at many of the issues facing our men in uniform, some more serious than others.

Yes, there are a lot of words involved in this collection, but each story captivates and keeps you moving forward. Each story is worth a read on its own, but add it to the other 12 and you have a bargain at any price. I tried to put the book down last night after the first chapter of The Houseboy… but the story wouldn’t let me go… Then I HAD to read The Only One Who Cares because it wouldn’t let me rest.

13 stories involving hot military men in love. Seriously does it get any better?

Kerry Adrienne – Cruise Control
A sweet tale of two veterans who are twisting in the wind who find each other and find home for the first time since they got out of their respective branches. There isn’t any angst in this story, but it is a great start to this collection.

Annabeth Albert – Resilient Heart
Two men in love; neither believes the other one loves them. One man’s life irrevocably changed. The other who wants to be that man’s everything. Guilt, prostheses, and depression keep getting in the way of their hearts. I loved Mackey and Xander. Mackey is devoted, but I loved that he was still real. He struggles with his feelings of guilt, his love for Xander, and Xander’s prickly exterior all in equal measure.

Keira Andrews – Arctic Fire
Okay, I am cold now. Andrews got the sense of place right in this tale of a military man and an Inuit native on the tundra. Flashbacks and guilt keep Jack Turner from living his life. When he is sent to the frozen lands of the north, he expects a routine mission and a quick return home. What he doesn’t expect is the redefine the meaning of home. These two men need each other. Neither expects to find love, and that makes it all the sweeter when it happens.

Brit Blaise – Storm Out
It isn’t easy being gay in Alaska. It is even harder being a gay Army Ranger. What do you do when the two come together in the tundra of Alaska during a white-out? Sam and Cowboy just happen to be two such men. When Cowboy comes across Sam on the tundra, left for dead by a couple of poachers, they start a lust affair for the ages.

I liked that this was written as the start of something, not the end all be all of their relationship. It was fast paced, but we are offered an HFN. These boys are ready to try.

Cassandra Carr – Civilian Master

A Nice BDSM addition to the collection. Nothing was too kinky. Impact play, some edging, and of course some D/s action. A big Bad Army ranger comes home to find his childhood best friend is a Dom and gay. It could be a perfect time for a second chance romance with his subby self. If they can both get past the hurt of the things left unsaid eight years ago.

I am not the biggest BDSM fan in the world. I can take it or leave it, so I am not going to assess the “rightness” of the BDSM in this story. I will say that it seemed to give both parties what they needed and hand a nice love affair woven throughout.

Lia Davis – His Guarded Heart

Action packed and full of hot sex. When you have to guard the life of a lost love, how long until you fall into bed together? If you as Lia Davis… it is a deliciously short time. There is a lot of tell in this one, when show would probably work a bit better, but the over effect was enjoyable. Hot cop, out senator, cute 4-year-old girl who is the apple of her daddy’s eye all come together for an enjoyable little story.

Sasha Devlin – Hometown Hero

Best Friend’s brother is probably one of my favorite tropes. A little of the forbidden, mixed with a bit of “there is no way he would like me” perspective, mixed with obvious affection on the part of the brother, who happens to be a closeted war hero… It all just worked for me. There were even a couple of heart-string tugging moments in the mix. Love these two and wouldn’t mind another story from them.

Rhi Etzweiler – Blood & Peyote

I will be honest. This one didn’t grab me. There are some very serious themes discussed, but I can’t tell you much of what happened as it just didn’t stick. There is always one in a collection. I hope you will have better mileage with this offering than I did.

Lucy Felthouse – Desert Heat

Okay, I read this one yesterday and am trying to remember it. I remember enjoying it well enough while I was reading it, but it obviously didn’t stick too long after that. Probably doesn’t help that the next one I read was The Houseboy, and I am STILL fanning myself from that one.

Oh yeah, this is the one with the interpreter. When they finally come together, it was hot, but the process of getting them together didn’t really do anything for me. It just wasn’t my story; I guess. It was well written, and someone is going to love it. Again, this one just wasn’t my favorite of the collection.

Amelia C. Gormley – The Houseboy: Initiation

Hot. Hot. Hot. Eighteen-year-old virgin with an as-yet unexplored penchant for kink. Daddy-bear former military man ready to make his fantasies come true. Hot. It takes a little while and an almost disastrous encounter for the two to come together, but when they do… oh boy. Impact play, a little daddy kink, multiple partners, and the hottest game of poker known to man.

Cat Grant – The Only One Who Cares

I will admit it. This this the story that first drew me to this collection. I read and thoroughly enjoyed The Only One who Knows and The Only One who Matters a number of months ago, so the chance to revisit Josh and David was too good to pass up. If you haven’t read the first two, go do it! That being said; if you haven’t read the first two you can still enjoy this story as it is. You just don’t know everything Josh & David have been through to get to where they are.

EM Lynley – Irresistible Forces

A sweet, hot second chance romance. I spent the first part of this story trying to remember where I had read this same premise before. However, soon Lynley had me completely tuned into Logan and Brody’s story and rooting for them to find their Happily Ever After. It takes a little work and a little luck, but they find a way through.

L.A. Witt – Flight Risk

LA Witt is a queen of the military romance. She just gets it right. Probably because she is a military wife and because she likes to get things right. I love reading her stories… and of course the hot and dirty sex scenes. In Flight Risk we have two co-workers, equals that want to be together bust just can’t seem to make it work. One is too broken, literally, to think he is a good bet. The other just doesn’t know what went wrong. They finally work everything else and find a way through the challenges.

A great ending to the collection.

In Conclusion

OMG, that was long! But hot and sweet and sad and and and…. what can I say 13 stories about hot military men from all walks of life. Some with PTSD. Some amputees. Some just trying to find their way. There were a few stories that I found less than captivating, but overall I enjoyed these stories form start to finish.
