Wow…where do I even start? My fingers are orange right now because I am scarfing down a bag of Garret’s Chicago mix popcorn as I type. My house looks like an atom bomb went off – with the suitcases open, swag everywhere, dirty laundry and general destruction of my kitchen. I guess my boys were missing their servant while I was in Chicago.
I had all kinds of good intentions about posting daily updates while at GRL, but I got too caught up in the madness, and too bogged down in the really slow Internet at the hotel to do much. I will just have to go over it a bit now.
I arrived late in the afternoon so I had to push myself to get social and catch up. I was so thankful for #TeamPrismGRL because I immediately felt welcomed. It was also nice to have a few San Diego friends attending, and they made me feel very welcomed too. My first official event was the Welcome Reception and that was when it finally sunk in – I am at GRL!
Oh, and then the even better news – GRL IS IN SAN DIEGO NEXT YEAR!!!!
That night the Juke Joint Party was super fun! I admit, I politely groped a few hot men. I also got to meet the outrageously wonderful Lisa Henry and JA Rock. Let me just say, those ladies set the tone for the next few days of awesomeness. I may think they both have some of the most screwed up imaginations on Earth (and I told them this repeatedly) but they are lovely women and really quite fun.
My fellow Prism members were also very fun and always made me feel included even when I was probably really annoying the crap outta them. Thank you! Also, I need to say a special thank you to Brandilyn – without her TeamPrism would not exist and she works really hard to make it happen.
I did actually go some events that involved books & reading. The Author Q&A with Kindle Alexander, Kaje Harper and L.C. Chase was my first official M/M book event. It was amazing to hear authors I really enjoy talk about their work and answer questions from the audience. I am not sure what I did after that, but I do know I ended up at the BDSM seminar with J.P. Barnaby, Lisa Henry and James Buchanan. This was very memorable indeed!
I completely blame Taylor V. Donovan for what happened next. I went to the author lounge (so cool) and someone fed me rum & Coke (did I mention I only had coffee so far that day?) and I was very, very happy during the next 2 hours.
Scrapbooking with the Rainbow Romance Writers. Well, two of my favorite things, scrapbooking and gay romance? Why, yes thank you! Sorry to all the authors that had to listen to me gush on and on to them after my Cuba Libres. They were all so delightful. I could start listing them here but it would be a big list. Needless to say this was one of my favorite events.
My afternoon was awesome, but I also need to put in a big thank you here for my kick-off to a fabulous night with the small group hosted by RJ Scott, Amber Kell and Stephani Hecht. These lovely ladies provided us with a pizza dinner and a roundtable forum to meet and chat with them. I met some wonderful new friends here, and it was definitely a highlight of the GRL experience for me.
Dreamspinner’s Casino Royale party followed that night and everyone looked amazing! JA Rock’s little black dress stole the show. I am so mad I don’t have a picture of her to share here.
I planted myself in one seminar room and stayed for all of the author storyteller spotlights. This included the historical romance, the snarky & sexy men and the Good Cop, Bad Cop, Drunk Cop. All three of these sessions were excellent and featured authors I adore. The Good Cop, Bad Cop, Drunk Cop was a hoot and yes, there was drinking involved! I should probably mention that the lovely Nicole Dennis had to sit next to me during these shenanigans and she was really awesome about it too.
Then the Featured Author Book-signing was on! Getting to walk around the large room and see so many of my favorite authors gathered together was insane. I also realized at that moment that there are a fair number of GRL authors I have not read yet. This will be remedied shortly. I have to say that hanging out with some of these yet unread authors has inspired me to buy more books. Yes, buying more books, excellent idea.
I did not go to the evening Samhain Sausage-Fest reception, but instead had pizza with some of my fellow TeamPrismGRL members. Again, another highlight of the weekend for me. We sat in a secret conference room and chowed down deep dish pizza and laughed a lot, a whole lot!
Then it was time for the Time Travel Party hosted by Totally Bound. I danced, I laughed and I had so much fun with many new friends. The costumes were amazing! I am sure many hotel guests were wondering what in the world was happening in there. The TeamPrism crew, Lisa Henry and Katey Hawthorne were my fun friends that night, along with Bonnie, Letti and Anya, we had a very good time until the wee hours.
Sunday morning came too quickly, literally way too quickly because I stayed up until 3 a.m.. Something that I have not done in 20 years probably. I just didn’t want the fun to end. Then the cruel reality of having to pack and get to the airport sunk in. We met up at breakfast and took some last pictures and went our separate ways. The only thing that kept me from crying was looking forward to next year’s conference. Thank you to all of the event coordinators and the volunteers – you guys did a lot of work and I know I don’t just speak for myself when I express my deep gratitude.
Well, that’s it. Many moments of laughter and great memories that flew by way too quickly. Thank you for a great GRL!
Oh – and did I mention I got to meet Mary Calmes? I GOT TO MEET MARY CALMES!!!!! She is every bit as nice in person as she is amazingly talented in print.
Much Love from Chicago!
