When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.
Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.
My View – Story:
Back with the boys at the THIRD’s and this is a fantastic book on audio. I loved this even more the second time round and the whole series is quickly becoming one of my all time favourites.
I read and reviewed this book the first time round in July and I feel like I was so eager to get my hands on it that I missed a few things. The main one being the humour, this book had me laughing out loud which is not always a good look walking through town with earphones in!
Dex has quickly become the man on the team that holds them all together. Whatever crisis, whatever team member, Dex always has a word or ten of advice for them. The team night out at the Karaoke Bar had me in stitches, Charlie writes with such humour but is also able to throw us straight back into the horror without batting an eye.
The burgeoning romance between Dex and Sloane is flourishing but Dex is falling hard and worries that Sloane doesn’t share the same intense feelings. This is where we see the vulnerable and sensible side of Dex as he admits his fears to first himself and then his partner. The more you know Dex the more you love him.
The story delves straight into Sloan’s past and it’s pretty dark and sad. He may be a tough Thirds’s agent now but it is certainly not how he and Ash started out. Taken from his home after a tragic accident he is housed in a facility that is ‘investigating’ how Therian’s bodies work. It is dark, dangerous and not something the government is proud of and has spent many years trying to keep it covered up.
As bombs go off around the city and small clues are left Sloan’s past hurtles towards his present. He is terrified of Dex finding out all the secrets from his past and it feels like he is slowly losing his mind. He can’t sleep for nightmares but his biggest nightmare happens whilst he is awake. Dex is kidnapped by the order, taken to Sloane’s old ‘home’ and held there as bait. In a situation all too similar to his dreams Sloane must dig deep and rescue the man he cares so much about.
There is less world building in this book and more character development. The glimpses we get of the other men on the team lead us to believe there are some huge revelations and crazy things to come as we move on with the series. For all his macho posturing I think Ash and Cael are going to have a love story to rival no other. Calvin and Hobbs are moving along very slowly, the whole team seems to be pairing off! Surely at some point Maddox is going to grow wise to the fact and that will surely be explosive!
Blood & Thunder is the perfect second book and leaves you wanting more.
My View – Narration:
Mark Westfield’s voice is perfect..again! I think he did an even better job than in book 1. Such a lot of voices to cover and he does it fantastically.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
