On September 1, 2011, TJ Klune wrote, “…it’s not about the ending, it’s about the journey…” in a review of Eric Arvin’s Woke Up in a Strange Place. With those words, two men began a journey of love and invited us to ride along. TJ and Eric have shared so much with us: their wonderful books, their smiles, their humor, their lives, and their inspiring devotion to each other. In December of 2013, their journey took a detour when Eric was taken to the emergency room. He survived the surgery to remove a cavernous hemangioma from his brain stem, but the challenges TJ and Eric face are far from over.
The authors in this anthology donated their talent as a way to support Eric’s continued recovery, to help bring strength to TJ, and to show both of them just how much love surrounds them. Grand Adventures is a diverse range of stories about the journey of love. We’re going on some grand adventures for a great cause. Thank you for joining us.
One hundred percent of the income from this volume goes directly to TJ and Eric.

My View – Story:
Grand adventures is a collection that comes from the heart. Each of the 20-someodd stories in the anthology is proceeded by a statement of love and support for the two authors for whom the collection was created. I am not here, however, to talk about the content of the stories so much as the presentation of the collection in Audio format. Leisa did a full review of the content of the anthology shortly after it was released.
My View – Narration:
There are 27 stories in Grand Adventures. 28 if you count the forward by SA McAuley. Some of the stories are vignettes with established characters. Some are stand alone shorts. But each has a different voice. A different tone. To that end, I was concerned about how this collection would translate to audio. It is not a short collection. I think the total running time is something in the vicinity of 12.5 hours, at normal speed. As you know, I don’t listen to any audiobook normal speed. Even on 2x speed, it is well over 7 hours listening time (don’t like the 2x fool you… it isn’t a true double time).
As such it could get old and monotonous quickly, however, with each story having its own narrator, it keeps the stories and collection as a whole moving forward. Not all the narrators are perfect. Actually, a few of them where down right eye rolling in their inflections and interpretations of the characters. However, the less than stellar narrators, I felt, were in the minority in this collection.
Some of my favorite narrators make an appearance, so that is always a plus.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
