Evan Kano’s life is on an even keel until the night he’s shot at the homeless shelter where he works. The resulting turmoil is not caused by a bullet but by a blast from the past: Evan’s first lover has returned to visit him in the hospital and deliver some big news.
Ten years ago, Dixon Bain walked out of Evan’s life because he thought his family didn’t approve of him having a male lover. But Dixon has discovered that what he thought he knew could not be further from the truth, and now he’s returned to claim the only man he’s ever loved… if he can melt the ice around the edges of Evan’s still-wounded heart.
What happens when you get shot? Does every lover from your past come out of the woodwork? Maybe just the important ones. Maybe just the one who deep down you wish wasn’t an ex.
That is the scenario explored by Mary Calmes in her 2010 Dreamspinner advent calendar contribution, Ice Around the Edges. While Evan is lying in a hospital bed, his once closeted ex-Dixon, takes the opportunity make it perfectly clear to Evan that he wants Evan back, and that he wants him for more than just guilt and pity. Ten years previous, Dixon had chosen his family and his inheritance over Evan. Can Dix make Evan believe him? Can Evan forgive Dix’s past transgressions?
As with many stories in the DSP Advent Calendar, Ice is too short to get a full understanding of each character. However, if you are a fan of Mary Calmes, you will find elements of her quintessential pairing in Evan and Dix. Dix is the Uber-Alpha and Evan is a twink with backbone and a little attitude.
As a Christmas story junkie and a fan of Mary Calmes, Ice Around the Edges was a fun read.
