Aside from a sympathetic parole officer, Aiden Finn is alone in the world. He knows this is his last chance – after a lifetime in and out of prison, one more mistake will land him there to stay. Unfortunately, his job as a night custodian at a motel is neither satisfying nor good for building his confidence, and booze and burglary are always just a step behind him.
Enter beautiful, exotic, and secretive Luka Gabor, the motel’s new security guard. He seems to know a great deal about literature, history, and travel but otherwise remains a mystery. Aiden has to admit, the sex has never been better, and he might even be feeling the beginnings of friendship. He dares to hope that this time, he won’t mess things up – if lurking monsters don’t ruin his plans.
My View – Story:
Aiden Finn is working hard to make a change in his life. As the night janitor at a small motel, he takes care of business while the demons of his past actions and addictions constantly nip at his heels. His encounters with the new and enigmatic security guard, Luka Gabor, suddenly shake his world and give him a chance at something positive and successful, if he can manage to overcome the obstacles that seem to not only come from within, but that also threaten his very life.
I enjoyed the time I spent listening to this paranormal m/m novella. Its focus is Aiden, an underdog and self-proclaimed screw-up with a long list of mistakes in his past. Recently paroled and currently employed as a night custodian, he feels this is his last opportunity to make things right, to choose the higher road, and to build a legitimate future for himself. His biggest problem, of course, is himself, and the battles he continually wages with his ghosts of decisions past. I like that he is not perfect, that he has numerous issues to contend with, and that he is about as humble as a man can get in his contrition and his efforts to finally do the right thing. He is truly a character worth loving as he endeavors to find not only his self-worth, but also his appeal and worth in the eyes of others. This is not just a romance; it is also a man’s journey back into the land of the living as he attempts to make a genuine, positive contribution to the lives of those he encounters.
When Aiden meets and begins a relationship with the dark and mysterious Luka, things take a definite turn. I enjoyed the contrasts between these two men, and it is quite apparent that Luka is much more than he seems. Luka’s character is magnetic and intoxicating, and his attraction to Aiden is swift and weak-in-the-knees intense. Their scenes together are hot and sensual, yet also tender and romantic. Luka sees so much more in Aiden than he sees in himself, and I found these interactions of encouragement between the two men the most satisfying. There are a variety of quirky and colorful secondary characters, as well, and Aiden’s connections with them drive the plot in interesting and satisfying directions.
I highly recommend this audiobook for a fun, entertaining read. Despite its length of only three and half hours, it is an intriguing paranormal story with a well-drawn cast of characters and a satisfying, well-developed plot. It is a great Halloween-time read, but I feel it would be perfect to pick up any time of the year.
My View – Narration:
I thought the pacing and clarity of Max Lehnen’s narration was quite good. Although I felt at times that the tone and timbre of his voice lent for a much lighter read than I thought the text intended, this was simply my personal preference for the content of this particular story. Overall, Mr. Lehnen provided an entertaining reading, and I would certainly look for his narration in future audiobooks.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
