Phoenix Inc, Book 1

When your past closes in, running isn’t always an option

The jobs Marcus Lowry works for at Phoenix, Inc. Investigations are quick and easy, and they don’t give him the nightmares his days as a CIA operative did. That is, until he gets involved in a case that grabs him by the throat and won’t let go.

Cole Jacobs left behind his old life on the streets to make a name for himself rebuilding high-end and vintage cars and bikes. But when a stalker threatens to kill him—and to hurt anyone who stands in his way—his past closes in on him, and he’s not sure where to turn.

The last thing Marcus wants to do is take on a charity case, and to say that he and Cole don’t see eye to eye at first is putting things mildly. But when the first attempt on Cole’s life nearly kills them both, Marcus realizes that Cole is in real danger, and Cole is forced to reveal everything. Almost everything. Because Cole’s deepest secrets could destroy them both.

Caroline’s View:

Great start to a new series which is set round a Private Investigators company. The company is run by Styx, Law and Paula who we have met before in the Bound by Law series. You do get quite a bit of interaction with this triad but the story is based around Marcus and Cole.

Marcus is ex Cia and since retiring and going to work as a PI his nightmares haven’t been quite so bad. A past relationship and his previous experiences in the field with the CIA have left Marcus closed off and suspicious of everyone.

Cole had an abusive childhood but when he hit the streets as a young teen things didn’t improve. When he needed food and rent he turned to giving men blowjobs in back alleys and after a couple of years this lead to him working for a private company and selling himself. He keeps himself to himself, doesn’t ‘do’ relationships and sex lost its appeal many years ago.

When mysterious notes start appearing at the garage that he now works at he fears his past is about to meet his present but has no idea who it may involve. By chance Styx witnesses him having a meltdown and offers his company’s services free of charge. Styx recognises a haunted soul when he sees one and gives the job of helping Cole to Marcus.

Marcus and Cole hate each other on site but differences very quickly have to put aside as things escalate. The evidence points to Marcus being a target just as much as Cole so the two men go into hiding together. There is some terrific tension that turns into brutal foreplay as these two men clash with each other and for the first time in years Cole has feelings for another man.

The attacks hit closer and closer to home and they are obviously dealing with a very experienced and clever psycho. There is a lot of tension and a good mystery to solve as well as two men letting down their barriers and falling in love.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I get the feeling that Styx, Law and Paulo are going to be playing cupid to any damaged hunk they come across!
