Phillipe wants more in life than what the slums have to offer. His father survived war and chaos to reach sanctuary and now works hard in the mines to ensure that his only son has everything the ‘better-half’ take for granted. Each wish fulfilled has come at the expense of his father’s health, however, and now it’s Phil turn to provide.
In search of work, Phil ventures from his humble home in the Lower-Levels for the wealthier upper area of the underground. What he finds is a suicidal nobleman hellbent on putting them both into an early grave. The noble reluctantly takes Phil on as a bodyguard. For the first time in Phil’s life, he sees hope, and he’s clinging to it. But how can he possibly guard someone looking to die?
As a stand alone story Substance by Ashlyn Forge certainly whet my little reader appetite for the rest of The Careless series. I will certainly be picking up Erosions when it is available. Don’t let the 2.5 label on Substance scare you away. You can certainly enjoy it as is. I just think that, as with most series, the experience will be richer with the backstory contained in the first two full books in the series.
Substance in a story about hope as well as a story about making the best of a bad situation. It has elements of love and lust, addiction and need, want and desire. It shows one man trying to rise above his station and going about it in every wrong way possible. It shows another man so heartsick over his the path his life has taken that he honestly doesn’t seem to care what happens to him anymore. It shows one man who wants nothing more than to be a father and see his son succeed.
I want to know more about the world that Forge has created. I want to know about Blue and Gara. I want to know where Phillipe’s life is going to take him. Don’t think for a minute that I think that these elements needed to be included in Substance. They aren’t what Substance is about. But they are stories for which Substance has piqued by interest.
