The poor economy has forced Dallin to return to prostitution to avoid homelessness, but when his old pimp hooks him up with a wealthy Dom, Dallin figures it’s too good to be true. William is older, wealthy, experienced, and a complete dominant. He’s the sort of man who can go to a club and pick up a dozen subs, and yet he wants to hire Dallin.
William knows how to succeed in finance and the bedroom, but trying to keep a relationship going is a far more difficult proposition. Instead of dealing with the messy reality of the club scene or dating, he decides to hire a sub. While William would like to have a long-term relationship develop, he’s not expecting anything. However the longer he plays with Dallin, the more he realizes that he wants more.
Dallin is willing to give his body to William—he enjoys the bondage, the games and ropes and toys. He’s more wary about trusting William with his heart. William is a master of domination, but for Dallin he wants to learn to love.
Josie Goodreads’s View:
Two Steps Back was perfect for me in every way, the closest thing to Pretty Woman I’ve yet read in MM Romance. I fell in love with both MCs from the begining and was routing for them all the way.
Dallin is an ex prostitute who managed to drag himself out of the gutter. He started his own business running a design studio but as the economy is collapsing he finds he can no longer make ends meet, he’s already lost his apartment and is literally days away from losing his office (where he now lives) when he turns to friend and ex pimp Ben for help in returning to his old life, just until business picks up. Dallin just needs a regular, a job to bring in some money to keep the rest of his life from folding around him. Little did he know that Ben would hook him up with an OCD Dom who ends up filling more of Dallin’s world that just money for his bills.
William is a man who wants order and stability in his life, he runs a major corporation and at the end of the day he just wants someone ready to serve him when he wants it and how he wants it. William has no time for a relationship to develop. To get what he wants he picks the easy way, he hires someone.
I’m a real romantic when it comes to MM Romance, that’s not to say I just read sweet romantic stories, I don’t, it’s just I’m a believer of true love, soul mates and people being meant for each other. William and Dallin are meant for each other, and that’s obvious from the start. Two Steps Back isn’t strong on the BDSM or even sex generally, which is unusual for this type of story but that didn’t spoil my enjoyment at all. I felt it was perfectly proportioned. What I loved most, what kept me hooked from start to finish was seeing their relationship develop. It’s true that subs have all the power and Dallin certainly had all the power in his relationship with William, which becomes obvious once Dallin’s brother, a typical teenager who thinks only of himself, turns up and proceeds to turn Dallin’s life upside down.
Dallin was raised a Mormon and through the interaction with his brother we find that his parents abandoned him for being gay, that’s why he was on the streets so young. I did find it a bit of a leap to expect Dallin to drop everything for a brother he hadn’t seen for six years, a brother he only remembers as a kid but then again I understood completely why Dallin wouldn’t want his brother to end up as he did.
William of course, with his OCD, wants to control everything; he agrees rules about leaving Dallin to sort his own life out then breaks every single one of them, not even understanding why what he does is so wrong. I understood how William was itching to help Dallin but part of being in a relationship is to trust the other partner to know what they are doing. I know William and Dallin didn’t have a typically normal relationship but it’s obvious that William cares deeply for Dallin which is why he wants to help so much. The little twist at the end when Ben reveals how he knows William is a lovely touch.
I adored every moment of Two Steps Back. One of my favorite MM romances ever is Lyn Gala’s Gathering Storm, and this book has just joined it. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a happy ever after, although this book ends with a happy for now I can easily seeing these two going the full distance as long as Dallin can keep William reigned in. Two Steps Back is the perfect example of love blossoming from the most unusual of beginnings.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
