Henry Cooley has good friends and a good life. He’s secure in his job and his relationship. He and Tom, the love of his life, are about to celebrate their twenty-first anniversary as a couple. Their son, CJ, is in his second year at Cal Arts. Henry’s only problems are his growing dissatisfaction with his job and the fact that Tom’s parents still hate him, even after all these years. At least those are his only problems until the morning he wakes up to discover Tom has vanished.
Remind me not to start a Carter Quinn book after midnight. This isn’t like feeding a Mogwai after midnight. This is me staying up until after 2 am because not only did I have to finish the story from the minute I read the first page, but also I had to recover from the hangover with which the story left me. Yeah, this book cost me a couple hours of sleep… and it was worth every lost second.
Vanished is not a rollercoaster of emotion. It is a slow downward spiral into oblivion. You experience every gut wrenching second with Henry. You experience the confusion, the fear, the loss, the hope, everything. In the end, I was bawling my eyes out. I was making myself dizzy crying so hard for Henry and Tom. I can’t remember a book affecting me so deeply.
I don’t usually read dedications in books, but this one set the tone. It was beautiful and heartfelt. I think those emotions perfectly matched the story that followed. Mr Quinn, I think you did well for him.
I don’t want to give away any plot points so I will end my review here. I just have one more thing to say. Mr. Quinn, I need book two right the hell now. That is all.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
