Book 2 of the Whitedell Pride Series brings the story of Derick, a wolf shifter who defects from his wolf pack lead by an evil Alpha intent on launching an unprovoked attack on the neighboring Whitedell Pride of feline shifters. Upon Derick’ arrival to warn the Whitedell Pride, the Whitedell Beta, Nate, immediately recognizes that Derick is his mate.
This story falls well within the “Mine!” shifter mate trope. Nate calls dibs on his mate, and he and Derick are forced to demonstrate evidence of their new mating to the wolf pack’s Alpha by Derick bearing Nate mating mark. Of course, they decide to instead jump immediately into a hot sexual relationship.
Admittedly, this story is somewhat predictable – unexpected mating, “Mine!”, lots of hot shifter sex – but it’s also fun! I enjoyed reading the story of how Derick and Nate’s relationship evolves from the heated sexual passion of a new mating, to the tale of two men truly in love with each other. The story has an equally interesting action packed story line with a satisfying good versus evil theme. I also like how the author ties in the characters introduced in Jamie, the first in the Whitedell Pride Series.
I recommend reading Derick, but I do think the story is best enjoyed if the first book in the series, Jamie, is read first. I do, however, have a personal gripe – the author leaves a delicious cliff hanger at the end of the first book involving pride member Keenan. This is not resolved in Derick … and according to the author’s blog, Keenan’s book is fourth in the series. Ugh! I hate waiting! But I will be reading future books in this series!

Derick is running from his pack, his family. He has to, if he wants to save innocent people. His Alpha is planning an attack on the Whitedell Pride, and he can’t let it happen. Sure, he knows he will probably have to pay a price for his betrayal, but he is ready to do it. He hadn’t thought his price would be a good one, until he finds his mate in the pride.
Nate is the pride’s Beta, and as Beta, he has to follow the unspoken rules that exist in the shifter community. He wasn’t looking for a mate, and he certainly didn’t think his mate would be a wolf shifter. Not that he has anything against wolf shifters, but this one brings way too many problems with him.
Derick’s Alpha knows what he has done, and he plans to make him pay. When Derick is kidnapped, Nate has to decide if he wants to play by the rules and risk his mate, or if he’s going to save Derick, risking a justified attack from the pack.
