Input vs Output ~ Posy Roberts: Outside the Margins

From September through December I tend to live in low-grade crisis mode. Last year these months were filled with promoting and preparing five books for publication, but only a meager amount of writing happened. I’m always too busy with other things.

I’ve discovered there’s a very precious balance between input vs. output in my life, and starting in September, all I experience is output.

With the beginning of the school year, there are a lot of adjustments. This year there were more than usual because my daughter is staying home and going to an online school. Read: I’m often the teacher, and there are no sick days. Ever. Usually I’d be teaching in my own classroom too, but thankfully, I took a year’s leave.

But there’s more than just school. All the autumn leaves that tumble to the ground are pretty, but they bring with them extra chores. And with a cold and long winter following very close behind, there’s even more to prepare in and around the house.

Let’s not forget about all the holidays. Halloween is our perennial favorite, but between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, there are so many get-togethers and trips planned, I feel drained before they start. I know my friends are just as busy because we barely have time to say hello, let alone get together to relax.

So why in the ever loving #*@% did I decide to partake in National Novel Writing Month this year?!?

10520823_715266981902411_7001340195752112774_nFor those of you who have writerly friends, you may have noticed your social media being filled up by pep talks, word count goals, and word count reports. Those of us choosing to partake in the torture privilege of engaging in NaNo have essentially committed to the task of writing a 50,000 word rough draft of a novel in 30 days. No editing, just writing.

I’ve succeeded in previous ventures like this but never in November! For me, it’s the worst month to stop the world to devote time to a novel. January or February would be better, and I already know summer is my best time because I’ve won the summer version called Camp Nano several times.

I was already depleted from my other obligations, but this year I was committed. I joined my local NaNo group, I attended weekly write-ins, and I pushed through. The first part of the month was successful because I was finishing up a novel I’d been working on for the last few months.

Of course, that’s when edits came from my publisher for my book coming out in a few weeks, so I had to put my NaNo project aside. When I tried to start back up, I couldn’t find my mojo. Technically I won, but I’m sure most of what I wrote in the last half of the month will end up in the trash. I’m not sure I’ll find my mojo again until the holiday season is done.

So I’ve been reading like a fiend. I’ve been watching hockey and movies and going on long drives where I take in the beautiful scenery.

Essentially, I’ve been seeking input, filling my soul back up, so I can get back to writing after the holiday season settles down.

How do you handle the imbalance of giving too much and not taking enough in during this time of year?
