Looking Back ~ Brigham Vaughn: Outside the Margins

Join us as Brigham Vaughn goes Outside the Margins.

First of all, I’d like to thank Brandilyn for inviting me to take part in Outside the Margins. It was such a pleasant surprise when she asked me to join and I am thrilled to be here!

As I thought about what to write I considered a number of topics but what I kept coming back to was that I’m about to come up on a rather major anniversary. I actually have several anniversary dates when it comes to writing m/m romance. There’s the date in October of 2013 when I got my first short story accepted by Dreamspinner as part of an anthology they did. There’s the date in February of 2014 when the anthology was published. But I usually go by the date right in between those, of December 9 of 2013 when I self-published my first short story. Only because it’s when I truly decided I was going to do this. I was going to be an author and do whatever it took to make that happen.

In that time I’ve self-published nine short stories, two novellas, and had the short story published in the Dreamspinner anthology. I have a self-published holiday novella coming out in the near future. I also have two novels that are inching their way toward completion and should be headed to publishers in the near future. I got to know many wonderful people in this community and I attended GRL this year. It’s been a whirlwind and I’ve come out on the other side a little wiser, a lot more tired, and as much in love with writing as ever.

It’s hard. It’s a lot harder than I expected and there were days I wanted to cry and give up. Blurb and summary writing is possibly the worst thing that’s ever existed. Marketing sucks. I’ve missed out on things in real life, my already sketchy fitness routine has only gotten worse, and I’m only now making a concerted effort to get more than five to six hours of sleep.

But I love making covers (except for the lack of good stock photos). I love getting feedback from my betas and editors. I love that the guys in my head won’t stop talking and that I have a folder full of plot bunnies. I love reading and writing more than ever. When it comes down to it, that’s all that matters, right?

I’m going to keep plugging away at my writing career and hopefully a year from now I’ll have more books out, be a little wiser, and be a lot more well-rested.

I’ll be back in January with a post on finding that balance. In the meantime, I hope you have a lovely December and if you celebrate any of the upcoming holidays I hope you have a wonderful time.

  1. How did I ever miss this? And, can I just say I’m kind of blown away that you are that new to writing/publishing? You know I adore your writing style, and I totally thought you were much more “seasoned” than that! Can’t wait for more Russ and Stephen – know that’s coming soon!
