Ever since he moved to London, shy editor Eric has been watching his neighbor, Crooked Smile, jog every morning. Aspiring restaranteur Rhys eats breakfast by the window so he can see his neighbor, Bed Head, help the old woman downstairs clean off her car. When Eric’s roommate unexpectedly returns home for the holidays, she realizes their idiocy and, with the help of Rhys’s business partner, Andreas, tries to help both men see there might be more in their futures than they’re seeing through their windows.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Advent Calendar package “Celebrate!”.
Poor Eric is shy. He watches life unfold from afar… even when he is in lust with his neighbor, Crooked Smile. No one like that would ever give dorky ol’ him a second glance. Especially when he can’t even utter a single word in the presence of said neighbor. Even more so because said neighbor has an exotic and hot boyfriend. The neighbor, also known as Rhys, is having similar doubts, because his ardorkable neighbor, bed head, just stares and glares at him.
That is the exact setup in Neighbors, Emma Wilson’s contribution to the Celebrate 2014 Advent collection from Dreamspinner Press.
I appreciated that this pairing was equitable. It wasn’t a dorky geek lusting after the “Big man on campus.” I appreciated that Rhys was just as wrong-footed by Eric as Eric was by him. I loved that the secondary characters helped the pairing along without being overbearing or unduly meddling.
Of course, this all takes place over the Christmas Holidays. In Neighbors Christmas isn’t magical. It is just a vehicle to get Rhys and Eric in the same room and their mouths forming words… and eventually other things. This story is another entry in my holiday re-read list.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
