I’m Evan Goodman, budding actor, future star, college freshman. Oh, and let’s not forget—recently dumped. If only my family wasn’t expecting to meet my new boyfriend over the holiday break. Enter JD Laurens—a sweet and quiet science major who mostly keeps to himself. When he gathers the courage to come out, poor JD gets abandoned by his only family right in front of me, and now he has nowhere to go for Christmas. But I have a proposition for him: pretend to be my boyfriend for the holidays so I can take him home. It’s a win-win. What could go wrong?

Brandilyn’s View:

I debated reading Holiday Hoax by Skylar M Cates for a while. I was concerned that the trite premise would make for boring reading. I can’t count how many Christmas movies with just this premise I have watched over the years. However, I generally enjoy Cates story telling, so I decided to give it a try.

In the end, I was not disappointed. Evan and JD are sweet together. There is not much conflict in the story. Even when the whole “hoax” is revealed to the family, it is accepted and embraced. I like that story is lead by the story and the romance, not lust and sex. I enjoyed watching the feelings between JD and Evan grow as Evan quickly forgot his ex.

I felt for JD from the beginning when he was rejected by his only family. I appreciated it when we knew that rejection isn’t going to get tied up in a pretty bow and delivered as a holiday miracle. JD and Evan felt real to me. They felt like people I could have known in college.

Often when a story is told in first person, you lose empathy for the other main character, I didn’t find that to be the case in Hoax. I enjoyed getting to know JD through Evan’s perceptive eyes. I would love to follow up with them in a few years.
