When Three is better than Two? ~ Clare London: Outside the Margins

Join us as Clare London goes Outside the Margins.

Clare London OtMI’ve just published my first MMM story – not that it’s the first I’ve ever written, but the first published. DISH OF THE DAY is part of the BRIT BOYS: ON BOYS m/m boxset due to be released on Dec 30, including 7 other great MM writers  (and available now on pre-order g).

It should be even more joy than the usual m/m – THREE men instead of two, right? From the author’s point of view, not necessarily! From the book what I wrote (a Morecambe and Wise Xmas homage g), here are some of the problems I faced. And let me add a thanks up front to my inestimable betas for helping me sort out Richie, Craig and Ben!

Who is HE? The eternal pronoun problem. Example: He pulled him close, his arms flailing, gasping at the tongue licking the nape of his neck while he chuckled at his moans. I mean … whose arms, whose breath, whose moans? sigh. Yet it can sound clunky if you write: Tom pulled Dick close, Dick’s arms flailing, Tom gasping at Harry’s tongue licking the nape of Tom’s neck while Harry chuckled at Dick’s moans… you get the point LOL.

Whose leg is this? The thorny problem has to be faced. Where do all those limbs go? He swung his leg over his hips … ouch. He swung his leg over his hips while he kissed down his spine … treble ouch!

Who said what? Conversation can be carried on between two people without the Tom said / Dick said tags. Add another person into the mix and you can end up with the reader’s mental head whipping back and forth like a Wimbledon final, trying to decide who’s talking.

And finally: Going to Tescos i.e. living Real Life. Is a threesome ever going to work in reality? What about the balance of power between three men sharing a life? What about the green-eyed monster of jealousy rearing its head? It’s tricky to make the reader believe this can WORK.

My three guys in DISH OF THE DAY are friends in real life, and I certainly know of many threesome friendships. It helps balance out the concentration of a bestie one-on-one, and brings a wider scope to the fun. Richie, my hero, is an introverted, hard-working and sensible kind of bloke, and works well with his two best friends. Ben is a glamorous, sophisticated and world-wise financier – Craig is a charming, ebullient and sexually adventurous marketing whiz. Ben and Craig trust Richie to ground them as their “third”, and they’re determined to return the favour by bringing Richie out of his intimacy shell. On one auspicious night, as Richie faces an apparently hopeless evening at his new restaurant, both Ben and Craig arrive and take matters – and Richie! – into their own hands.

Authors need to craft their writing carefully to make a threesome work on the page, both emotionally and logistically. Reading aloud is my litmus test of whether a scene works – though it causes a few raised eyebrows at home! And at the end of the day – even if there are many polygamous relationships happening out there, fictional or in reality, successful or otherwise – DISH OF THE DAY is fiction, and mainly for fun and frolic.

Feel free to read it on release and find out why my working title was “3 Men and a Chocolate Torte” LOL.

Thanks for reading.

About Clare London

Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with the weekly wash, waiting for the far distant day when she can afford to give up her day job as an accountant. She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.

Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter 3 stage and plenty of other projects in mind . . . she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.

All the details and free fiction are available at her website. Visit her today and say hello!

  1. Not enough m/m/m these days. Will it really work? I’m not sure. Well, it obviously does for some people, but I like to read about it. There hasn’t been much lately, glad to hear you’ve got one. Will have to check it out. Hugs
